Last Sunday, I saw Wicked at an Off-Broadway stage in New York City, and it was a pretty awesome experience. I had always wanted to see a musical in NYC, but I never thought I actually would. So, when my roommate (who is a much better match for me than Glinda initially was for Elphaba) provided me with the opportunity, I had to take it. It might have been the only experience I will ever have in NYC, but I'm perfectly satisfied with that. It was an incredible day that I'll never forget.
If you've seen Wicked, you're familiar with the song, "Dancing Through Life." It's one of those songs that I just can't get out of my head, and I can't feel sad when I'm listening to it! Well, the more I've thought about it, the more I've realized that I want to dance through my life. Call me crazy, but I honestly think that dancing, like laughing, is something that adults and young adults don't do enough. We need to loosen up and just have more fun sometimes.
Along with literally wanting to dance throughout my life, I want to figuratively do the same. What does it mean to figuratively dance through life, though? It means living creatively, spontaneously and adventurously, instead of walking through each day like a disengaged and desensitized zombie. Make each day something to look forward to! For example, my roommate and I have created special names for every day of the week (Mocha Mondays, Wyld Wednesdays, Dancing Fridays, etc.), so that we always have something be excited about. That's dancing through life.
Dancing through life is having inside jokes that cause you to laugh so hard that you fall down in public and end up making someone's day. It's going out of your way to spend time with someone that you care about, even when you know that it's going to throw off your normal schedule a little bit. It's trying new foods, making friends with the person that you're riding in the elevator with and wearing those shoes that you love, but everyone else thinks are ugly. Don't be afraid to express yourself. Don't underestimate the power of your smile. Most of all, remember that with each day, you are given the chance to make a difference in someone's life.
And don't forget to dance when you get the chance!
