What Is Dance Marathon And Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

If your campus hosts a Dance Marathon, you are one of two people: you don't know what DM is, or you know all about it and love it. I have to say, people in the second category have immeasurably more fun than the first.

Dance Marathon is a cross-country movement of students raising money for children treated at Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in their area. Throughout the year, money is raised through various events all while getting to know Miracle children and families at the hospital. The Main Event, a 12 to 40-hour marathon of dancing, culminates the year to celebrate the money raised and finish strong to reach personal and collegiate goals.

We dance For The Kids (a.k.a. FTK). We dance to give hope. We dance for those who can't. But you should dance because children have the opportunity to live longer because of the money we raise. Children can have a normal childhood outside the walls of the hospital because of the funds collected through dance marathon programs across the country. Wouldn't you want to be able to say you helped make that happen?

The first Dance Marathon was organized around Ryan White, a young boy who contracted HIV/AIDS from a bad blood transfusion. It was at Indiana University where Ryan was to attend the fall after he passed away. Ryan spread awareness of accepting others who are different and impacted the world, and the first Dance Marathon raised $10,900. This year, Indiana University's Dance Marathon raised $3.2 million and Ryan's movement is still in full force.

So why am I telling you all of this? Because Dance Marathon needs you, and you could probably use some Dance Marathon, too. The beauty of life is remarkable and these children deserve to experience it. They deserve people to fight for them when they grow weary, love them enough to stand when they can't, and give hope when they need optimism.

Dance Marathon has also had a profound impact on my own life. After I experienced South Carolina's USCDM, my heart changed in more ways than I can explain. My eyes have been opened to the purpose in my life, and I have been humbled beyond explanation. Most people do not enjoy emptying their wallets, but I now find joy in donating to my local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. But some of you may say, "Well I don't have any money to donate." Well, Dance Marathon wants more than your wallet, DM wants your time, effort, and passion. And I promise, after your first experience with DM, you'll be filled with more passion and fire for the fight than you ever thought you would.

For Hope. For Love. For The Kids.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
