One of the first news breakers for the swim community this year was the announcement that the Vollmer clan will be adding another one to their tribe. That is correct. Dana Vollmer will be having a child this year. The expected due date is for July 2017.
It wasn't too long ago that the swim community began buzzing about the current world record holder bringing her first child into the world. Everyone loves to follow what the Olympians are up to in the post-Olympic experience. Even more exciting was to find out that Dana Vollmer was hitting the water and focusing on making a comeback for Rio 2016. To imagine that a previous gold medalist was out of the water to care of her child and then to turn around to fit in elite training is impressive. To get in elite shape and make it to the Olympic Trials, but to make it onto a gold medal winning relay is practically unfathomable. And yet she did it.
Dana Vollmer has been an impressive athlete. She swam for the California Bears in college and continued her elite training with them. She was the first woman to break :56 in the 100 meter butterfly.
She is a joy to watch compete. Her husband and son are always nearby to cheer her on as she races. She is joined by other elite athletes who are continuing the trend of parenting along with their professional lives, such as Matt Grevers. This is an exciting addition to one of the Olympians the american spirit holds dear to its heart.
