Odds are if you watched Nickelodeon as a child, you’re familiar with the name Dan Schneider. The long time kids’ show writer and producer created hits such as The Amanda Show, Drake and Josh, Zoey 101 and iCarly to name a few. He is the engineer of so many people’s favorite childhood shows, and now Nickelodeon is parting ways with him.
How is it that one of Nickelodeon’s most successful producers for over 25 years could not have his deal extended? It appears that this story is bigger than a tabloid, with reports of abuse coming out. In light of the recent scandals within Hollywood, this appears to be a preemptive move initiated on Nickelodeon’s end.
This news comes as an even larger shock as Viacom, Nickelodeon’s parent company, has seen a 22% decline in its core viewership base as it continues to combat alternative media like Netflix and Youtube.
Nickelodeon released a statement on the situation: “Following many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our longtime creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneider’s Bakery have agreed to not extend the current deal, since several Schneider’s Bakery projects are wrapping up, both sides agreed that this is a natural time for Nickelodeon and Schneider’s Bakery to pursue other opportunities and projects.” Nickelodeon is also reportedly paying out $7 million to Schneider after canceling his most recent shows.
Schneider has long been noted for his strange posts and photos with young stars of his shows on social media. Rumors have been floating around through anonymous posts outlined here for years now. Schneider has also been reported to have a temper in the boardroom and on set. Several other reports and strange media posts are out there, and it looks like Nickelodeon has finally started taking notice amid the current scandals.
