Jerry Jones has said a lot of crazy stuff during his 27-year tenure as the Dallas Cowboys’ Owner, President, and General Manager. But what he said about veteran quarterback, Tony Romo’s future recently, might be the craziest thing he’s said yet. After being named backup to rookie Dak Prescott, Romo gave a classy statement surrendering his starting position and praising Prescott.
“He’s earned the right to be our quarterback,” Romo said. “As hard as that is for me to say, he’s earned that right.”
But Jones was quick to reassure the media and fans that he expects Romo to continue to be a member of the team. When approached by the media following their 9th straight win, which happens to be the longest winning streak in franchise history, Jones raised quite a few eyebrows when speaking about Romo’s future.
“It’s not a goodbye,” he told reporters Thursday. “I think Tony has five years left of really competing for a Super Bowl. I believe Tony will be the quarterback on a Super Bowl team. I believe that strongly. We’re talking generic now, and I have no plans for him not to be part of the Dallas Cowboys. Not a consideration.”
Jones also feels confident that potentially keeping both Prescott and Romo on the roster isn’t totally out of the question.
“It is very tenable for me to see on a long-term basis us being strong at quarterback with these two. That’s where we are,” he said. “To be sitting here with an accomplished Dak Prescott and a healthy Tony Romo in a world that depends on having excellent quarterback play, I have to pinch myself.”
While we won’t know about Romo’s future for sure until offseason contract negotiations, it’s obvious that Jones will have much to think about considering his and Romo’s history and relationship.
