College is supposed to be a time where you find yourself, but also a time where you find your “forever friends.” You know, the friends that last a lifetime, the friends that are in your wedding, or the friends who have babies at the same time and your kids end up being best friends just like you two were. OK, maybe that last one only happens in the movies, but nevertheless, you are always searching for those special friends in college. The truth is, sometimes you have to meet a lot of different friends until you find your “forever friend.”
1. The Roommate
The first person you meet on your crazy campus. The person who can get on your nerves equally as much as they can keep you sane at this school. After a long day, the only person you want to talk to about it is them. They know you better than anyone, and they aren't shy about telling everybody how much you fart in your sleep. From the deep talks about God to the emotional talks about how you thought, “He was the one,” they are there for you, no matter what. You love them, but you love them even more after they buy the groceries for the month. Deep down, you know you couldn't survive college without your roommate. They are the reason you are still alive after you fail that bio test, and also why you have gained 15 pounds of ice cream after failing that bio test.
2. The Party Friend
Oh, the party friend. The friend who hates you for not going out at 9 p.m., but suddenly loves you to the point of hugging you endlessly at 1 a.m. You love these friends, and college wouldn’t be the same without them. They always seem to be more carefree, and they never cease to let you know what they're really thinking. They keep life exciting on campus, but when it's 3 a.m., you really want to let them know what YOU are really thinking. You can always count on this friend to make you feel better after having a rough day, even if their only solution is “getting turnt.” They're crazy, but everybody needs a little crazy in their life once in awhile.
3. The Teammate
These friends are your go-to throwing partner, lifting buddy, carpool option, and pretty much your other half when in the same sport at college. They keep on you to better yourself in your sport, but somehow become one of your closest friends on campus in the process. You’re with this person early in the morning for workouts and late at night after practice is over. They’re one of the only people you can vent to about your coach or team, and they actually understand what you're talking about. They're always by your side when you don’t play well, and always there to give advice to help you out. They always have the best intentions, and look out for you whenever coach throws in a last-minute practice. Because you spend 90 percent of your time with this person, you get to learn a lot about them. You know that they’re not a morning person at 6:30 a.m. lifting, or that they have an infatuation for Chinese food, after insisting to eat it after every away tournament. Without them, you’d be even more lost than you already are at college, so never forget to thank these important friends.
4. The “When is This Due?” Friend
College classes can be stressful, and without this friend, you would be screwed. Let’s be honest, it is incredibly hard to stay focused and hear every word the teacher says during the whole 50 minutes of class, so, sometimes, you miss when that eight-page paper in composition is due. This happens more frequently than we like to admit, and we seem to always forget to ask the teacher. This is where the “when is this due?” friend comes into play. A lot of the time, you and your friend trade places manning this role. There’s always one of you that isn’t paying attention, but no worries! You’ve got each other's backs, thick or thin, because if one fails, you both fail--that’s the beauty of it. You never have to go through any of it alone. This friendship usually only lasts in the classroom, but you thank the heavens for sending this friend to you, because you probably wouldn’t pass college without them. So, when it's 11 p.m. and you forget what that paper is supposed to be about and it’s due at 11:59 p.m., you’ve got a person for that.
5. The Forever Friend
Finally, the friend that trumps all other friendships you make in college. These are the friends that are the maids of honor in your wedding, the godparents of your kids, or even the middle namesake of your child. They are the friends you found and stuck with, whether it be for all four years or just one year. The length of the friendship means nothing to these friends, it’s the quality of it all. These friends were there to see you at your darkest moments but loved you through it. They know every deep and dark secret, but love you anyway. These people listen to your doubts and problems and try to be the best "Dr. Phil" they can be to help you through it. They are the ones that make college the best experience of your life. College is great with them, but you know your journey won’t end after you graduate. Your forever friend is there until you’re old and gray, and they will love you the same.
Here’s to all the friends out there--to the ones I’ve met, and the ones I have yet to meet. Thank you for making me who I am. Life wouldn’t be the same without you.
