Ever since Dak Prescott played his first NFL game in preseason for the Dallas Cowboys, we knew we had something special in him. It was a blessing to have drafted this young gun to take over the team for injured Tony Romo. Now the argument is, who should start for the Cowboys once Romo is healed?
The rookie QB (quarterback) out of Mississippi State, who was the Cowboys fourth round draft pick, has been on fire ever since he hit the field as an NFL pro. He’s young, quick, can read the defense, and is poise in the pocket. He’s perfect. In the preseason he had 5 TDs (touchdowns), 0 INTs (interceptions) and 78% completion rate. So far in 6 regular season games he has attempted 182 passes and completed 125 passes for a total of 1,486 yards. A total of 68.7% completion rate and the has the second best QB rating in the NFL according to ESPN.com. Prescott threw his first interception in week six against the Green Bay Packers. He broke a previous record held by Tom Brady, for the most yards completed without an interception as a rookie QB. Another positive about Prescott is he has been handling the defensive pressures like a veteran, which causes problems for other teams. The Cowboys have a 5-1 start under Prescott's lead and they are 3rd in power rankings going into week 7.
The Cowboys had planned on starting QB, Tony Romo, who has been hurt all season after injuring his back in the preseason. Before, he was hurt last season with a collarbone injury (2015), which resulted in a 4-12 record for our Boys, which was the worst record since 1989. I am a personal fan of Tony Romo, and always have been. I have always stood by him when everyone else would bad mouth him. (After multiple failed attempts in playoffs, fumbled snaps, interceptions, etc, etc.) When he was healthy in the 2014 season, Romo ended the season with the highest QB rating in the NFL. Which was why 2015 was such a punch in the gut for us fans, because we had high hopes to win it all. He knows how to control a game, and could win them in the end when he needed to. He has been the clutch guy for the Cowboys until his new injuries. They estimate Romo will return to the field week 8, but these estimations vary. Head coach Jason Garrett says that Romo needs to gain his strength back before he can come back.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says Romo will be the guy once he is completely healthy and will be eligible to return to the game, despite the success in Prescott. I think this is because he has so much money wrapped up in Romo after making a $108 million contract in 2013, which is good until 2019. I know for a fact Jones can see the success in Prescott and how the Cowboys can build their future on him. But he wants Romo back on the field because that is where most of his money is going.
I personally think that the Cowboys need to stick with Prescott, he will be the future for the Cowboys. Prescott alongside rookie running back Ezekiel Elliot will be dominant for years to come, and Cowboys Nation will see more Super Bowl rings. I hate to admit, but a future is no longer behind our once beloved Tony Romo. I used to be a firm believer he was, but in recent events, I will back Dak.
