Daily Struggles Of A Tall Girl

No, I don't play basketball.

Daily Struggles Of A Tall Girl

Being tall is both a blessing and a curse. I don't have a hard time staying slim, but I find it difficult to scope out a cute boy who is over six feet tall. I don't have to worry about not being able to reach things. But I am frustrated when the ankles of my jeans go up to my lower calf. I was always tall for my age, and neither of my parents is very tall, so I don't have a clue where I got it from. Being tall is a daily struggle, and here's why.

There is no comfortable way to sit down.

Whether it is at a desk or at a booth in a restaurant, there isn't enough room for my legs. My friends call me "spider legs" because every time I try to cross my legs under the booth at lunch, I end up kicking someone. I dread long car rides because there is never enough leg room. Nothing is more annoying than sitting cross-legged for a five-hour car ride. Along with sitting, every time I walk with my friends they always get frustrated with me. I hear "walk slower" from 500 yards behind me. It's not my fault my legs take up 3/4 of my body. I can't control the length of my strides.

Clothes.

Internet shopping is a lifesaver, allowing me to special order my jeans so they will fit my 27-inch waist along with my 32-inch inseam. Although, internet shopping can be a struggle. You aren't sure whether you should buy that shirt in a small or medium. The small will fit your torso, but it will also be a crop top. While the medium is the perfect length, but way too baggy. Don't get me started on sweatpants. Why do you think we wear leggings so much?

So many questions and side-comments!

Do you play basketball? How tall are you? Can you reach that for me? No, 5'9", and no. Not all tall people play basketball; I sure don't. Well, I did in 7th grade, but it turns out being tall also means I am super uncoordinated. I am too gangly to control where my arms go, let alone a basketball. Also, can someone invent a bed long enough for my legs? I am sick and tired of my feet hanging off just about any bed I lie in.

There are a couple things that are nice about being tall. I can sit however I want; my legs are long but flexible. We give the best hugs because our arms are so long! For the ones who do play basketball, they can dunk. For those of us who play volleyball, we have no trouble up at the net. And for the others who run, they have the best advantage of all: the natural gift of having legs twice the length of your opponent's.

So, being tall may suck at times, but embrace it. There is nothing wrong with being OK with they way God made you!

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
