My Single Dad Raised Me As A Tomboy, And I'm So Glad He Did

Why I always choose sneakers and T-shirts over heels and a dress...

When I was younger, my parents got divorced. I lived with my mom half the time, and my dad half the time. Since my dad was a single father, and I was the only child he had ever raised, he stuck with what he knew best. He signed me up for sports when I turned three years old and bought me clothes from the boy's section at the store.

I obviously did not care because all the boys in my kindergarten class thought I had the coolest shoes.

1. I Was Always Involved In Sports

From the time I was three years old until junior year of high school, I was always playing sports. That is how I grew up. My parents signed me up for baseball and basketball when I was three. My life was on the softball field, on the basketball court, or the golf course for a pretty long time. I loved playing basketball outside with the boys that lived around me because I knew I could always beat them.

2. I Only Wanted To Wear Sweats And Sneakers

If we are being completely honest, nothing has changed. At all. I would choose to wear comfy clothes over a cute outfit any day. I think I liked to dress sporty when I was younger because it made me feel cool and athletic. Now, I wear those clothes because it is comfy and I still don't like to dress up.

3. I Don't Like To Wear Makeup Or Do My Hair

Someone bought me this shirt and it couldn't more fitting for me. First off, I don't like to wear a lot of makeup because...

1. makeup is expensive

2. it clogs up your pores

3. I am very bad at doing make up and

4. it is such a hassle

I am going to be 20 years old and I do not know how to put on face make up. There are so many different make up products to choose from and I just really do not care about any of it. You're welcome mom that I never got super excited to go to Sephora except to get my face wash. And yes, it is true. I never do my hair. I have super curly hair so normally I take a shower and let it air dry, and it just does whatever it wants. Most of the time, my hair is in a bun or ponytail of some sort.

4. I Am Very Competitive

Since I grew up playing sports, I have a natural competitive side to me. While at Auburn, I played on as many intramural teams as I could. During basketball, I pushed some girls down and would yell at them to back off of me. I most likely did this because I was losing, and I do not like to lose. Being competitive is a good thing, because it always makes me want to do better. Not just when I play sports, but in life too.

5. I Want To Pursue A Career Revolved Around Sports

At Auburn, I am majoring in Media Studies, but I want to have more of a concentration in sports. I didn't know what I wanted to major in until going into my sophomore year at college. I was talking to my parents and they told me that I love to talk and I love sports and media. So boom. Auburn had the perfect major for me. Whenever I tell people what my major is, they always ask, "So what are you going to do with that?" There are many things that you can do with that major. I would love to work for ESPN or Fox Sports and be an analyst or even with the production team. But because of my upbringing and how much sports have impacted my life, I want to pursue a career still involving sports even though I am not playing.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
