An Open Letter To My Dad

Thank You, Dad

An Open Letter To My Dad
Fallon Looney

Dear Dad,

First off, I would like to thank you for all that you have done for me. Without you, I would honestly be nothing. Thank you for your loving support, and for always having my best interests at heart. Thank you for providing for me; not only financially, but emotionally too. Thank you for being my number one fan and coming to every dance recital, even though I know that you would have been more interested in a hockey game (ha-ha).

Dad, I would also like to thank you for loving me unconditionally. You have taught me that I deserve the very best in life, and to never settle for less. You are the first man to enter into my life, and you will always be the most important.

You taught me how to fish, ski, snowboard, and even play hockey! Although I am the biggest girly girl, I will never pass up on an opportunity to go snowboarding or to a Bruins game with you. You have also taught me so much about life, and your influence will forever be in my heart and mind. You have taught me the importance working, the importance of saving, and also the importance of living life to the fullest and allowing yourself to splurge a little too. Thank you for teaching me an amazing work ethic, and for setting such a great example.

Dad, you truly are the best. I can not thank you enough for putting up with me, especially during my teenage years. You have always been kind and understanding, and I thank you for that. Thank you for suffering through those mall trips where I would make you follow me around the mall for hours, I know it was painful (to your sanity and to your wallet), but I know that you valued our time together, and I truly did too. Thank you for always being interested in my life, although you may not understand the troubles a young girl goes through, I want you to know that I appreciate your efforts to always make sure that I am happy.

Thank you, Dad, for also supporting me in all of life's adventures. I know that it must be hard to see your little girl grow up, and I promise that I will make you proud. I promise to always incorporate all of your teachings into my life, and I will never forget all of our special memories together.

Thank you for teaching me to be humble, kind and never bitter, for always being one call away when I need to talk, when I need advice, or even if I need your help doing my math homework. You always tell me that my best qualities are my kindness and my generosity, and you do not even realize that I get those qualities from you.

Dad, I want you to know that I have treasured every moment that we have had together. Thank you for giving me the most amazing childhood, and for being there for me no matter what. I will never forget our family vacations, our father-daughter lunch dates every Sunday, and all of our other fun times.

I know that you always say how proud you are to have me as your daughter, but I would like you to know that I am even prouder to have you as my dad.

I love you to the moon and back, Dad.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
