In recent years social media has become very fond of the trend of "dad bods." The Urban Dictionary describes dad bods as "a male body type that is best described as softly round. It's built upon the theory that once a man has found a mate and fathered a child, he doesn't need to worry about maintaining a sculpted physique."
Basically, it means that guys are allowed to drink as much beer as they want, have a beer gut and still look cool. Which I am totally for. I am 100% all for body positivity do not get me wrong, but how come it's seen as normal for guys to have dad bods but it's "gross" for women to have the so-called "mom bod?"
For years mom bods have had a negative connotation. A "mom bod," as defined by Urban Dictionary, is "a woman who looks like they just had a kid. They have attributes of saggy tits, flat ass, hair in a bun at all times and a resting birch face."
So, clearly, two different tones were used for writing these definitions.
Like I said, I am all for the dad bod movement. I just find it upsetting that it's totally OK for men to drink beer, eat pizza and wings and not be judged for the fact that they have a beer gut. I'm a lady and I love pizza, wings, ice cream and beer. But when I start to get a beer gut it's "gross."
A guys' beer gut symbolizes that he's had some great times and likes to party.
A girl's beer gut is simply viewed as a girl who eats more Oreos than vegetables and that she should really get on a treadmill.
I'm so happy that we really are as a society starting to recognize that more and more body types are beautiful. We claim to believe that all body types are beautiful but are still very quick to knock some down. I want nothing more but for dad bods, mom bods and all bods to be seen as cool, sexy, adorable and any other positive adjective. I'm sick of seeing that only certain body types are acceptable. While the dad bod movement is a step-forward we still have many steps to take before social media depicts absolutely everyone as beautiful.
