Let's get one thing right off the bat. I do not dislike the looks of the "Charmed" reboot because the new sisters are of Hispanic descent or that one of them is a lesbian. I dislike the reboot because it looks exactly the same as the original. Three sisters who just a lost a mother figure find out they are witches and have to save the world from demons every other week while juggling real life responsibilities. "Charmed" fans have been through that for eight seasons.
We want something fresh. That's what a reboot is supposed to be.
The new series focuses on sisters lesbian activist Melanie "Mel" and freshman sorority pledge Maggie Vera who just lost their mother when she supposedly committed suicide by jumping out of the attic window in Hilltowne, Michigan. Mel believes that their mother was actually murdered and is angry that her younger sister carried on with her life so easily. Hilltowne University lab's newly hired employee Macy Vaughn shows up on their doorstep three months later, voicing her beliefs that she is their sister. You can guess what happens from there. Pretty much exactly the same as the original.
Actress Holly Marie Combs, who played middle sister turned eldest Piper Halliwell in the original, expressed her opinion of the reboot in this tweet:
Here’s the thing. Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our… https://t.co/DbXU8KVYeX— Holly Marie Combs (@Holly Marie Combs) 1516949530.0
Shannon Doherty, who portrayed eldest sister Prue before she was killed, was insulted when the CW show was described as a "feminist reboot," but remained hopeful that it would inspire a new generation as the original did before. Alyssa Milano, the actress who portrayed the youngest sister turned middle child Phoebe Halliwell, voiced her opinion as well. Even Rose McGowan, who played youngest sister whitelighter-witch Paige Matthews, took to Twitter:
They really are running out of ideas in Hollywood.— rose mcgowan (@rose mcgowan) 1382733061.0
The reboot's producers commented that they did not want to continue on with the Halliwell sisters' plot as the series felt like it told a complete story.
Personally, I would love to see a show about witches who have known of their magical powers their whole life, descend from a long line of them, and suddenly become the Charmed Ones. We could see Magic School in the adolescent years from the point of view of a student, the trauma of fighting demons and being around the fighting from such a young age, and let's face it, little girls with magic would be hilarious. Plus, the sisters could have the rest of their family be alive! The Charmed Ones can easily be POC and have LGBTQ+ representation in this. Even if they were to continue with one of the original sisters' children or maybe even their far descendants, POC and LGBTQ+ representation is still possible. Also, the characters can be involved with STEM careers as well like eldest sister Macy Vaughn in the reboot.
It seems like the only thing different about the reboot from the originals are the characters and location. They also started with the half-sister storyline right away instead of after Prue's death in the original with the introduction of Paige. Yes, it will be refreshing to see Latina women on the TV screen, but as I said before, these characters can be easily placed into a whole other plot. The house in the reboot trailer almost looks identical to Halliwell Manor as well, along with the Book of Shadows, and one of the sisters not wanting anything to do with being a witch. Like some of the OG actresses expressed, I wish that they were involved with the creative project along with original series creator Constance M. Burge and executive producer Brad Kern.
Then again, I could be completely wrong and the reboot can take a completely different spin than the original did. However, from the trailers and teasers, it looks pretty similar. Nevertheless, the reboot of "Charmed" will premiere on Sunday, October 14th at 9 p.m. on the CW and I sincerely hope that it will inspire this generation of young girls, I will just not be watching it (and hoping for a "Charmed" revival). For now, I will stick to watching my original "Charmed" on Netflix.
