How To Cut Your Own Hair

I'm definitely not the best person to listen to, but let's do this anyway!

I've never shied away from doing different things with my hair. I've been through various colors of the rainbow, I've cut it all off to the point of a pixie cut, and I've grown it so long that it almost reached my belly button. All of my hair changes have been so much fun because I get to wake up the next morning with a different head of hair.

More recently, I became very bored with my hair because it was growing out and it looked damaged and downright sad. I considered dying it, but I dyed it a reddish black color not even two months ago, so I ruled that out. So I decided on the next best thing. I wanted to cut my hair. But I didn't want to go to a stylist and have them do it, I wanted to do it myself.

In all honesty, every time I did something different to my hair I always went to a professional. I didn't know any of the tips or tricks so I wanted to play it on the safe side. But as I have gotten older, and more careless about my appearance, I've decided I don't really care if it looks that bad. It's just hair, right?

So, within the past ten months, I've dyed my ends pastel pink, I've dyed the whole thing brown, I've bleached one streak and dyed it hot pink (yes, just one and it was NOT my best decision), then I dyed it all black again. I did all of those things myself and they never turned out

that bad. Honestly, I'm just messing around. They really never looked bad at all.

Well, now my hair is a reddish brown color and I got bored. So, I cut it. I didn't go crazy and cut it into a pixie cut again (I kinda wish that I had, but alas…) I only cut it to my shoulders and guys, it wasn't hard at all.

But then I kept cutting and somehow got the whole thing to look decent. So, how did I do it? Good question. I'm not exactly sure if you should follow my advice, but you're here so why waste your time, right? Let's cut some hair.

The first thing I did was wet down the ends of my hair. I didn't wash or soak them, I simply took some conditioning spray and sprayed them until they were moist. After that, I brushed out my whole head of hair and put it into a low ponytail in the back.

Once I put in the initial low ponytail, I took another elastic an put it lower on the ponytail until my ends were all gathered together. The whole thing bears similarity to that really bad trend of bubble ponytails that we used to give ourselves in 2005.

But remember, don't use a ton of elastics-- just use the one to gather your ends to the length that is suitable for you. Once I finished that step, I cut off all the ends right below where the elastic was. I removed the ponytail and the elastic at the bottom and looked at the back of my hair to see if it was all even. It wasn't.

So, I tried something else that I found on the internet. This time, I part my hair right down the middle and split it in the back creating two sections that I pulled forward. It looked like I was giving myself two low pigtails if you need a visual reference. Although instead of tying them off one by one, I took them both and tied them under my chin.

That's right. I gave myself one of those mini beards that we used to do when we were in elementary school.

Ohh yeaaaaah.

Okay, back to the *tutorial.* Once I tied my beard, I cut off the ends underneath of my chin. After I removed the elastic, I checked the back of my head again and it was actually even this time. So, I basically kept cutting until I gave myself my desired length. I definitely cut off way more than I had intended, but now I have one of those fashionable "long bob" things that people refer to as "lobs." I love being a lob head.

Okay but all jokes aside, cutting my own hair wasn't hard at all. It takes a minute or two to get fully adjusted to using the scissors yourself-- and it's definitely helpful to have a mirror where you can see the back of your head.

I know this probably isn't the best advice on cutting your hair and you should definitely keep looking at youtube videos for help, but I totally recommend trying it yourself. It saves you time and money and you don't have to be worried about the hairdresser giving you the exact opposite of what you want. If you're really brave, then give it a try! If you're smart, then don't! Either way, have fun with your hair.

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.
