5 Thoughts All Customer Service Employees Think To Themselves

Customers can be the best, but they can also be the worst.

Most of us fellow college students have worked in the customer service industry. Whether it is retail or waitressing, customers can be real jerks.

I've been working in the customer service industry for almost 5 years now and I can tell you first hand that we run into all kinds of people while at work. Some days we have the best customers in the world and others it seems like no matter what we do, nothing will please people. I have created a list of 5 thoughts that all of us employees think during a typical day at work.

1. Do you know how to control your kids?

Harsh I know it seems, but I was raised to respect the people around me no matter what environment I am in. When your children are running around the restaurant screaming bloody murder or taking merchandise off of my shelf and throwing them on the floor. Should I spank them or should you? I've got a job to do.

2. I don't make the rules around here.

Your coupon doesn't work so why are you mad at me? Why are you complaining about the prices? Hearing the customer asks about things I cannot control makes me roll my eyes a million times on the inside. I do not, I repeat, I do not make the coupons nor the prices. I eat/shop here too. I pay the same prices you're paying now. Oh and while we're at it, you're carrying a Louis Vuitton tote, I don't think your $15 shoes can get any cheaper.

3. Go ahead ask for the manager, they'll say the same thing I just did.

This is another irritating request we get a lot. I had to learn the ways of this business in order to continue being employed, so why am treated like I don't know what I'm doing? I know all of the policies and if I don't, then yes, of course, I will ask a manager for you.

4. No, I will not make the prices lower for you.

As an associate of a retail store, this comment makes me want to turn around and walk away from them. Of course, I have the buttons to make the prices lower for you or override your expired coupon for you. Will I do it? No, I absolutely will not. Also, don't guilt trip me into saying another associate from another store 500 miles away did it for you a year ago, I don't care and I would like to keep my job.

5. Some customers make our days better.

Not all of the customers we come across are evil. Some customers we get take the time to ask about our day or why we're working here and what we're doing with our lives. I try my best to keep my private life away from my job because I want to do the best I can, but some days it helps when you ask me how my day is going. Those little things, even just being polite while standing in line goes a long way.

All in all, remember to be kind to your fellow customer service employees. No, this may not be the job that we are wanting to do for the rest of our lives but we are working hard and giving our best every time we clock in, so give us your best.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
