I have Wanderlust. I've got twitchy feet that just want to get up and go! I am not content with staying in one place for very long. After all, there's a great big world to wander. I've got a feeling that I'm not the only one with these desires. Luckily I have found a temporary high for a lifetime addiction to travel if your interested:
Road trip through the flyover states!
If you've ever flown across the continental United States and looked out your window at the land below, you probably know what I mean when I refer to the "Flyover states." For those of you who have never had this experience, allow me to explain: the flyover states are the states that generally make up the middle of the country.
A lot of people take this beautiful part of the country for granted. They're called the flyover states for a reason: when you fly over them all you see are fields of wheat, corn, or some other kind of crop. What you don't see, however, is the true beauty of the land there. Big cities are few and far between and the little bit of light pollution comes mostly from the heavily populated east coast cities.
If you are out in the middle of the desert in New Mexico or up in the mountains of North Dakota you will see the night sky like you have never seen it before. Billions of stars and galaxies and (in the North) aurora borealis. The light pollution in the eastern cities of the United States (I'm looking at you Tampa) drown out the light from the night sky restricting the view for your star gazing pleasure. There are prairies where you can see for miles around in any direction. Snow-capped mountains near Denver set against the bluest sky you could ever hope to see. Rivers and lakes so clear it looks like glass.
The reason people with wanderlust want to travel so much is so that they can see all the world has to offer. A road trip through the heartland of the United States offers so many awe-inspiring experiences. Forrest Gump said it best, "... like that mountain lake. It was so clear, Jenny, it looked like there were two skies one on top of the other. And then in the desert, when the sun comes up, I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the earth began. It's so beautiful."
This road trip will make you realize just how small we really are in the grand scheme of things. Nature kind of has that affect on people. Then again it gives you a kind of peace you can't find anywhere else. Jason Aldean sums it up pretty well in his song Flyover States from his My Kinda Party album.
Grab some friends or take it solo, either way a road trip through the heartland of America might be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to that Wanderlust.
