Why Local Coffee Shops Bring Happiness In My Life

One of the greatest joys in my life is finding a great cup of coffee. The coffee I order always depends on my mood: café italiano, cappuccino, straight black coffee, etc. Once I have my choice, I sit down and take everything in. Why do I love local coffee shops besides the drinks they produce? The atmosphere, the warmth, the people I interact with and around me, the inspiration; it drives me.

I’ve always taken my coffee seriously. Comparing certain drinks from different places and commenting on how well it tastes. Each coffee has it’s story: the country is was produced, if it was fair traded or not, locally roasted, etc. With each cup of coffee, also comes my own story to create.

Local coffee shops have added meaningful memories to my life. When I was in Belize, I frequently visited a café called Formosa. I knew the coffee was always local and it was always delicious. It’s a small café, but I enjoyed sitting in there with friends, talk about everything or sit in silence and just enjoy the atmosphere.

One Line Coffee in Columbus, Ohio, brought this sense of home to me. I was in Columbus with my friend Grant for a U.S. soccer match and our goal was to visit one coffee shop since we are both coffee enthusiasts. Not knowing the area, we stumbled upon this place and loved it. The hand brewed coffee from different countries was delicious. In the shop, time seemed to stand still. It also felt like a new adventure.

My mom has also been a big reason as to why I love coffee and traveling to shops so much. One of our favorite places we’ve gone to together is a shop in Decorah, Iowa called Impact Coffee. Besides the delicious custom brewed coffee, we both have had deep conversations there about everything. It has served as a way to reconnect over a cup of something we both enjoy.

I don’t know why exactly some of the best conversations or experiences happen in a coffee shop. Maybe it’s the joy from a great cup of coffee, the atmosphere and vibes bouncing off the walls, or the genuine people you can connect with. No matter where I go in life, those local coffee shops offer a place of retreat from reality and a deeper connection with the world.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
