I have known MV for many years from back home. He has always inspired me with his generosity and selflessness, which is why I was so excited to grab a cup of coffee and talk to him for this article. When I asked him to meet with me, he agreed with humble excitement.
He sat across from me, coffee cup clutched in between his hands and a small smile on his face. We engaged in some small talk at first, filling each other in on what has happened in our lives since we saw each other last. Finally I dug a little deeper, convincing him to tell me about his goals for the future; to work in health care administration. When I asked him why he wanted to work in health care administration, he replied, "I want to be a light in a place with a dark history of abuse." He continues on to talk about how he wants to bring love and understanding to the families of the patients.
Anyone who knows MV knows that this is a common theme in his life. When asked if he had a motto which he live his life by, he replied,"It's not about doing the easy thing, it's about doing the right thing." He continued on to say that people often find it easier to look after themselves, but it important to look out for others. If you do this, you will have people there to look after you when you need them.
MV practices generosity on all levels on a daily basis. From going out of his way to help his friends, to donating time and money to organization, and even choosing to spontaneously pay for stranger's groceries at the store. He believes that acts of kindness on any scale are completely worth it. When I asked him why he does it, he said "It's worth it to know someone is looking out for you, somebody cares, not out of an obligations but because they want whats best for you." This is an idea that was passed down to him by his Grandmother growing up. His grandmother, along with his immediate family, are some of his biggest inspirations.
I think that the main idea that can be taken away from MV's story is that generosity is something anyone can practice. No matter how small an act, every bit of it counts, and it is something to strive for in your daily lives. Love, kindness and generosity make the world go round.
