Cultural Shock/ Acceptance.

The traveler must understand the importance of anticipation. Its the anticipation that makes the journey.

Cultural Shock/ Acceptance.
Shelby Williams

It is the action that determines the emotion evoked by the individual. It is the emotion that will determine the next action of the individual. This can be argued as a conundrum but it must be regarded as common knowledge because it is the anticipation of the person that will determine the outcome of the adventure. In a week, I will be in the middle east. Exploring the depths of the Persian gulf while expanding my perception of the world. Unlike most, I am not scared. Instead, I welcome the angst and transform it into anticipation, as I should. As each person should when traveling to a part of the world that demands respect and understanding. Granted, the social customs that are practiced in that region of the world can be argued as “misogynistic” or “overtly oppressive”. Yet, with an open mind, it should be perceived as conservative and unique.

When discussing travel, the middle east is not on everyone’s wish list. With the constant demonization of countries such as Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran in the American media it makes it difficult to entice others with the idea. However, it is the social impact of these negative depictions of the middle east that should encourage us to uncover the truth. To see for ourselves instead of relying on biased social/news media outlets. Granted, there are issues that countries in the middle east are currently experiencing. Which is no different when compared to other countries that are facing issues of their own. This is a universal truth that travelers will have to acknowledge as fact. If not, the experience will not be a great one. Instead, it will be filled with discomfort, culture shock, and a waste of time. Ignorance does not always equal bliss. Which is why it is important to acknowledge this universal fact and take the country for what it is. To explore the country for what it is and make your assumptions once you have successfully immersed yourself in the lifestyle. The process of immersion will be saved for another topic but as far as this particular topic goes, I hope I have made my point clear enough.

1.) That anticipation opens the door to something beautiful - while angst results in chaos.

2.) The process of transforming angst into anticipation is a slow and steady one. Inform yourself of where you are going and try to assimilate yourself to the lifestyle of that particular country.

3.) Be prepared for things to be different. Because they are different does not mean they are necessarily bad.

4.) Journal your adventure. It would be nice to have documented evidence of your growth.

5.) Be sure to enjoy yourself. Have fun.

And this isn’t advice I alone follow. This is directed towards each nomad that chooses to pursue an adventure not a prison sentence.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
