The year was 1987, my mom had just started college at the University of Minnesota and was living in downtown Minneapolis when the Twins won the World Series. She describes going out into the "craziness" as an once in a lifetime experience; one that in 2016, I am a lot closer to experiencing after the Cubs win in Game 5 of the NLCS.
Growing up in a sports focused household in Minnesota I've always know what was going on within the sports world, but I never realized the effect it could have on a community. Living in Lake Forest and being in Chicago for the past year I have seen the hope and support of Chicago sports fans. Everyday, no matter where I am in the Chicagoland area, I see a large amount of people dressed in some type of Chicago sports gear. It doesn't matter, win or lose the fans are still supportive. This pure optimism can best be seen with the Cubs and their 108 year World Series drought, there is a sense of hope and pure optimism, even when they were down 1-2 in the NLCS there was still hope. No one thinks of loss, they know and believe that the Cubs can and will win. From t-shirts that say "I ain't afraid of no goat" to people dressed in full Cubs attire to go to class, there will always be the hope and knowledge that the Cubs will win.
The year is 2016, I am a student at Lake Forest College and this is the year that the Cubs will go to the World Series and win.
