Hey Chicago what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!
Over the past three years at college, I have called the northern suburbs of Chicago my home. Now living in Chicago, and being someone who cares about sports, you start to learn Chicago fans do not mess around. These fans take their professional athletics very seriously—basically religiously. This is no exception when it comes to the Chicago Cubs baseball team (so sit down White Sox fans because you don’t really count).
Last week I went to the playoff-clinching game against the Brewers, and while the Cubs lost, they were still able to clinch the playoffs because the Cardinals lost too. But at the game I had a realization:
Cubs fans really are the best fans.
From having one of the most iconic stadiums, to the electric crowds, to having “Go Cubs” yelled at you by strangers, these fans are the most dedicated, most enthusiastic, and most in tune to the sport and their team’s players. And I don’t blame them, have you seen Kris Bryant?
And for goodness sake, these poor fans have been waiting over 100 years to win the World Series. So simply put, whenever the Cubbies win the World Series, the city of Chicago will burn. Yes, celebrations will be that crazy because that’s just how invested their fans are.
The fans have excellent reasons for being so hyped, especially now. The Cubs are coming off a red hot season last year, and they aren’t holding back this season. They have clinched the NL Central Division and are heading into October better than ever. And mind you, this is with Schwarber being injured less than a week after regular play began after Spring Training.
Rizzo. Bryant. Arrietta. Fowler. Lester. This team has quite the resume of powerhouse players. And to make things better, they have Joe Maddon as their manager, who has become just as involved with the fans. At games, you will definitely see his “Try Not to Suck” t-shirt amidst the sea of blue.
So if you're ever in Chicago, make sure to go to Wrigley Field, grab a Chicago dog, and Fly the W.
Go Cubs Go.
