I’ve never been much of a sport’s fan (except when I was running around the court or field in high school P.E. class…the good ol’ days). In fact, I don’t watch football at all, and I’m not a hockey fan. Two sports I do enjoy, though, are basketball and baseball, and while I haven’t always been an avid fan, I’ve always been a Chicago Cubs fan. Other than my American Girl Doll adventures, my other memories of Chicago include attending Cubs games with my Dad and brother. And I have to say, this year I’m glad I’ve kept my eye on the Cubs, because boy has it been exciting. Plus, aside from the game, the fans are pretty interesting to watch too, especially at college—so here’s a few Cubbie fan characteristics I’ve noticed around campus…
1. You wear cubs gear almost daily, like maybe even multiple articles of clothing.
You know that just one t-shirt isn’t going to do it. I mean, what if they play three games in a row—of course you’ll need a shirt for each day! And, let’s be honest, any good Cubs shirt needs a hat to go with it.
2. A white flag is a good sign to you.
Others are thinking surrender or truce, but you’re seeing blue W’s printed on big white flags. Well, I suppose that’s the more optimistic route. #FlyTheW
3. You tend to get irritated at everyone who is suddenly a Cubs fan.
I mean who doesn’t love a little campus bonding over sports? But if they haven’t been following since day one, then you shake your head because they missed the train. And if they’re a real Cubs fan then they should probably know who’s pitching tonight and who Grandpa Rossy is (P.S. can I get away with pretending he's my dad since my dad's name really is David Ross???)
4. You also get irritated when people tell you the cubs haven’t won in a 100 years.
It’s true, but you’re pretty sure that it hasn’t been the same team for 100 years either, which means the Cubs have just as good a chance as any other team—plus, it just makes it's that much more exciting now.
5. Your twitter, texting, Facebook, etc. are filled with 75% Cubs news/talk.
This one is just my personal opinion (about guys in particular), but almost every conversation I hear or see between them is Cubs related these days. It’s okay, at least I know how to get you talking.
6. During night class your laptop sits open and you look extremely interested during a terrible lecture.
Okay, don’t pretend. The teacher knows you’re watching the game on your laptop, but she’s also secretly imagining that your intrigue is a reaction to her marvelous teaching skills. Play ball.
7. You spend most nights in the crappy school lounges because the game is on.
Well, the couch bottom fell in tonight, but you’ve got a game to watch…so the lounge it is.
8. You remember listening to Pat and Ron.
Maybe this is just me, but I had to add this one in here because it almost seems sentimental. Plus, listening to games on the radio is the best when you have great commentators.
