I'm sure people are still thinking about the Oscars that aired on Sunday, March 3rd, but I'm still thinking about the 2nd annual Anime Awards! When I first heard about there being an anime awards show, I immediately marked the date and time it would be aired on my Google calendar! On February 24th, it was all about the Orange Carpet because that's when Crunchyroll's Anime Awards occurred. As a way to get excited about the show, Crunchyroll had a pre-Anime Awards Show anime marathon that started on February 22nd.
When it was finally the chosen day, the awards ceremony was hosted by actor Anthony Carboni and actress and producer Erika Ishii at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Los Angeles, California. For those who were not able to physically attend the award show in Los Angeles, such as myself, the live social video platform for gaming, Twitch, allowed you to live stream the awards ceremony.
I have to admit that I did have a hard time navigating my way through the platform (mostly because of my lack of not knowing how to properly work anything), but once I saw the live stream video I felt accomplished! One thing that I can say that set a part this award show from others is that it has personality. I was able to be fully engaged throughout the entire show! I felt as though I was able to really connect with the hosts and stars that made an appearance.
The show started off by recognizing Cowboy Bebop's 20th year anniversary. As a way to commemorate 20 years, the award show band played the anime's iconic theme song, "Tank." After the band was able to hype up the audience, the hosts came out and the show took off! The show consisted of 17 categories such as Anime of the Year, Best Action, Best Villain, and more. It was not a surprise that "My Hero Academia" - season 2, dominated most of the categories.
There were also amazing special appearances and presenters such as Mike Daniels from the Green Bay Packers, and Stephanie Sheh (voice actor in Sailor Moon) along with presenting the Industry Award to Christopher Sabat. Sabat is a popular voice actor known for roles such as Vegeta from Dragon Ball series, Alex Louis Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist, and more.
Even though this awards show was not as "glamorous" as the Oscars and there were a few technical difficulties, this ceremony was still amazing. I cannot wait for next year's show!
