Even though gender roles have certainly shifted since the 1950s, it is fair to say that gender stereotypes still exist. Although people would never admit this to be true, it is simply a bias that humans carry around with them.
Now there is a reason why women only make up around 20% of all police officers, it is due to the stigmas that surround careers such as police officers, FBI agents, or any career involving law enforcement.
Times are changing, but when I tell people I am a criminal justice major looking towards working as a police officer or having a career in the FBI reactions vary- from girls it's all support and words of encouragement.
From males, well that reaction depends. I either get the "are you serious?" face, or words of discouragement telling me how difficult it is, how strong you have to be, and quite frankly, I am tired of hearing it.
Whether a person wants to be a professional basketball player, a doctor, a geologist, or a police officer, why not support them? Everyone has different goals and aspirations- it is not your life nor is it your place to judge.
So next time someone pitches an idea that may seem a little farfetched or "out there," listen with respect and with an open mind. Times are changing and people are allowed to shoot for the stars.
Instead of envisioning a 5 foot 9, 190 pound man being a police officer, or an FBI agent, start changing your perspective. Open your mind to people of all race, gender, height, weight- to be whatever they want to be.
Because as far as I'm concerned, no matter the gender, any goal is achievable with a bit of determination and hard work. Start respecting others goals, aspirations, and dreams and the world will be a much better place.
