Alternative Ways To Get Your 10,000 Steps

We crave a different kind of *buzz.*

If you have a Fitbit, you quickly learned what great deal of satisfaction it was when you first hit that 10,000 step mark, and the device buzzed off of your arm in an unexpected, skipping-a-heartbeat way. After feeling that sense of satisfaction and joy, you started to crave it. With coming back to campus, you either thrived at hitting that goal, or you haven't felt that accomplishing buzz in quite some time.

Now you miss the feeling of it, and you need it back. Here are some simple ways to make sure you reach that goal now that we’re back into the swing of things.

1. Take the stairs

As simple as it sounds, it starts to add up. I lived on the 6th floor of a dorm last year and each day instead of hauling it to beat everyone to the elevators when we got off the bus, I hauled it to make sure I was first on the stairs so I didn’t lose momentum on the hike up! Not only are you getting steps but you’re stair count will be through the roof.

2. Take a walk around campus

Maybe go a different, longer route than normal on your way home. Or, simply take a walk every morning or night to wake up or unwind, respectively.

3. Go to the gym in between your classes

If you’re anything like me, and you have an awkward break between classes where there wasn’t enough time to get home or start anything productive from school, you can always hit the gym and utilize the treadmill to keep stepping.

4. Don't take the bus

Eventually, the sun will shine through the clouds and we will have spring again. This is a great opportunity to skip out on crowded buses and walk to your classes, or your housing if you live on campus.

5. Take baby steps

Though this seems a little pathetic, I’ve come to realize how useful it actually can be when you’re down to the wire. Also, as a person with larger strides, I’m pretty convinced the person with shorter legs has the upper hand here.

6. Park farther away

If you’re choosing to drive instead of just walking to the local store, park in a distant spot. That way, not only are you saving time searching for a spot nearer the store, you're also getting more steps in.

7. Pace back and forth and do jumping jacks

Again, this is a desperate, down-to-the-wire situation, but you can never go wrong with pacing while on that weekly phone call home, or by just doing some jumping jacks in your room to bug the people below you.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
