Mother’s day is one of the most important days of the year. This is the person who brought us into the world and who cherishes and supports us throughout our life. Mother’s are their children’s number one fan and only want them to be the best they can be. Showing our mother’s appreciation for them on their special day is one of the most heart warming feelings for them because we are showing our love and saying thank you for being always being there and taking care of us.

Many college students struggle with how to show their love for their mother’s on this day because not everyone can make it home in time for finals and some kids just have no clue what to buy as a present. The most important thing to remember is: it is not about how much money you spend on their present, but mainly about the thought that goes into it. Sometimes you do not even need to buy anything to show your mother how much you appreciate her. From a Facetime call to a handwritten card with flowers, our mother’s appreciate us putting in some effort to show them how much we care about them.

Here are some creative gift ideas that mothers will love and that are easy for college students to either make or purchase:

1. Old Photos

Print out pictures of you and your mother and family and create a scrapbook or collage that you can decorate with different materials such as stickers, paintings or drawings. Or print out a single photo and choose a pretty frame, maybe in your mother’s favorite color.

2. Handwrite a card and buy flowers

Adults love receiving handwritten cards, especially from their children. In this generation, many people chose to send texts or emails, but when you give your mother a handwritten card she will feel the appreciation and care that you have for her. As clique as it is, buy your mother a pretty bunch of flowers. Every woman loves getting flowers, especially bright and cheery ones that boost the energy on her day.

3. Homemade Bracelets or Jewelry

Believe it or not, jewelry is quite easy to make. If you have old string laying around and you find a necklace that might be broken or an old pendant that your mother used to wear, look up different ways to make the string into a necklace and put the pendant on it. You could even buy some beads and clear stretchy string to create a new fun bracelet, necklace or even earrings.

4. Make coupons

Make a set of coupons for different things that you could do for your mother. For example, one family dinner or one dinner for you and your mother. Another example could be one set of laundry or one vacuum around the house. Just a little something to show how much you care.

5.Manicure/ Pedicure

Although handmade items are more sentimental, all mother’s deserve a nice spa day. Treat them to a manicure/ pedicure for after a stressful week.

Remember all the things our mothers have done for us, not only today but every day since we were children. They deserve more than just one day to celebrate, but show your mother a little extra love on this important day!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
