Creating A Home Away From Home

A complicated week and a half in the life of a BSU freshman...

If you're like me, then your first week as a freshman college student could have gone a little smoother. Perhaps it was my near-death experience of a long-boarder almost crashing into me at high speed, or emailing the wrong professor multiple times about how I was lost and couldn't find the classroom for "his" 8 AM class, even though it wasn't actually until 12:30 in the afternoon. It also could have been walking one mile to the gym only to find out that it closed a half hour before. Maybe your first week was even worse than mine. But no matter how bad that first week was, I can assure you it gets better.

Missing home is normal, and so is being afraid to make new friends all over again but that shouldn't stop you from at least trying. Pretty soon, you'll have people that will run through the campus sprinklers at one AM with you, or maybe even be willing to stay up all night playing games in someone's dorm, and you'll realize that college isn't half bad. Sure, you'll eat a lot of ramen noodles and Easy-Mac, but that isn't necessarily an awful thing either. After all, noodles and mac n' cheese are delicious. Homework can be overbearing but we're all in the same boat. More often than not, my roommates and I get distracted easily from our daily assignments and end up filming each other on Snapchat dancing to Christmas music. While "All I Want for Christmas is you" by Mariah Carey is an absolute jam, at the end of the day, we regain focus and get our work done. I've realized the freedom of college to be able to decide whether to do your homework or to go to BINGO or your school's trivia night, BINGO and trivia night is always the answer, as long as you don't miss any due-dates. Now I'm not trying to ridicule anyone about college because I've only been here for a week and a half, but these are some of the things I've picked up on.

So, even though I almost ended up in the hospital, on the verge of possibly getting kicked out of a class because I missed the first day, and had a head-start to my "freshman 15", I think that with some help from good friends and interesting professors, I'm going to be just fine here at Bridgewater State University.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
