Crazy May Holidays You May Not Have Known About

There are numerous wacky and crazy holidays every day that go uncelebrated so I have decide for this week's article I will outline some of the crazy holidays in the first two weeks of May and give them some time in the spotlight to shine.

May 1st

Mother Goose Day

Mother Goose Day was created recently in 1987 as a day to appreciate nursery rhymes and stories. It does not represent a certain person, just the stories that were written like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty.

It is celebrated by reading Mother Goose stories and rhymes to your children or grandchildren.

There is a Mother Goose Society, which I find kind of funny, that runs the holiday. They created the holidays flower which is a Cathedral Bell and the recipe of the day which is for Cathedral Cookies.

Brothers and Sisters Day

This holiday is a day to cherish your siblings. Sure, there are times when they can drive you up a wall but you will always love your brothers and sisters. The older you get, the more you learn to appreciate them. Celebrate this day by being close to your brothers and sisters. This holiday is a nice way to let your siblings know that you care. Brothers and Sisters Day is similar to National Siblings Day, on April 10th.

May 3rd

Lumpy Rug Day

This holiday is a little out there. Lumpy Rug Day is intended as a day to appreciate your rugs. On Lumpy Rug Day you are supposed to enjoy the day by getting rid of your old, lumpy rugs and get new ones so that you can be comfortable. If you don't have any lumpy rugs, you are supposed to enjoy your lump-less ones and be glad you don't need to deal with a lumpy one. This holiday has been seen as a joke more than anything else, comics about the holiday tend to come out in the newspaper on this day.

May 4th

Star Wars Day

Every Star Wars fan lies in wait for this holiday to celebrate their love of the movie franchise. Star Wars Day is May the Fourth, because of the famous quote "May the Force (Fourth) be with you". I mean who doesn't love a good pun!

The creation of this holiday was actually an accident. In 2005, a German News TV channel wrongly translated this famous Star Wars quote. In German, "May the force be with you", was incorrectly interpreted as "We are with you on May 4th". I think even though this is how the day was created, it is still a well-loved holiday. You can celebrate in many ways including:

  • Watch any of the Star Wars movies
  • Have a Star Wars marathon, and watch two or three (or 4) of them.
  • Get out your lightsaber and have a duel with your friends.
  • Have a Star Wars costume party.

May 5th

International Tuba Day

May 5th is of course Cinco de Mayo for those who celebrate it but I am sure you didn't know that it is also International Tuba Day this year. It is always the first Friday of the month but it happens to fall on the 5th this year.

This day was founded by Joel Day in 1979 because he felt tuba players were not respected. International Tuba Day recognizes those musicians around the world who struggle with the weight and size of their big instrument.

May 6th

International No Diet Day

International No Diet Day encourages us to appreciate the bodies we have. It encourages us to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes....... and that's okay. I wish this day was recognized better because it is a really cool holiday.

The holidaywas created by Mary Evans Young in 1992. After personally experiencing anorexia, she worked to help people appreciate themselves for what they are, and to appreciate the body they have. In addition to anorexia, other medical problems can result from taking diet pills, and surgeries, such as stomach stapling, to control weight.

International No Diet Day is a good opportunity evaluate to see if your diet is the right option for you, while taking a break from it.

Remember you're body is a temple, you need to be safe when it comes to dieting.

May 8th

No Sock Day

It's time to get out your sandals and flip flops. Go ahead..... free your toes of the confines of socks and stockings. Let your toes get a breath of fresh air. While this holiday may be weird, it also claims to be environmentally friendly because it will reduce your laundry load.

May 9th

Lost Sock Memorial Day

Lost Sock Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for the unmatched and missing socks that you know are somewhere in your house. Many socks tend to "get eaten by the dryer" but this holiday was created for you to start a very brief search for your missing socks or reminisce on the sadness that the loss of the sock has brought you. I am personally still waiting for the partner to my sushi sock to come back to my sock drawer, so I will definitely be celebrating this year.

May 10th

Clean Up Your Room Day

Now this should not ever be a holiday. This sounds like it was made up by a bunch of parents who got together and thought they could trick their kids into cleaning their rooms. It didn't work. This holiday can't been publicized in many years but I am sure some parents still look forward to this holiday. But don't forget this holiday also applies to parents, so make sure they practice what they preach.

May 11th

Twilight Zone Day

Twilight Zone Day is mysterious, weird, and surreal. This holiday is designed to be that way, just like the show. This day's main purpose is to celebrate the widely popular television show.

May 12th

Limerick Day

Limerick Day celebrates the birthday of Writer Edward Lear who popularized the poem known as a limerick. Celebrate Limerick Day by writing a limerick or two or by sitting down and reading a few humorous limericks. They are guaranteed to make you smile.

May 13th

Leprechaun Day

Saint Patrick's day is a huge day in March that celebrates Irish pride and everything about Ireland. But, tiny Leprechauns with their precious, hidden pot of gold, deserve their own day reserved just for them. They do so much on St. Patrick's Day that they need a day where they feel appreciated.

May 14th

Dance Like a Chicken Day

Dance Like a Chicken Day is for those who like to do the "Chicken Dance". All 'ya gotta do is dance like a chicken. It's a tradition at every wedding reception to play and to dance the Chicken Dance. It is also played at other social events where there is a band and dancing. This day wa created to give chicken dance lovers another chance to dance.

May 15th

National Chocolate Chip Day

National Chocolate Chip Day celebrates sweet and tasty chocolate chips. Chocolate chips are a great invention, and deserve some recognition. Chocolate chips are popular in cooking and baking, for a wide variety of breads, cakes, and cookies. We wouldn't have any of the great chocalate chip pastries without this decadent treat, so why not celebrate it.

There are many recipes for having a successful National Chocolate Chip Day. And, every one of them includes chocolate chips.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
