A romantic musical comedy-drama created by Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh Mckenna, centers around Rebecca Bunch, played by Bloom, who is a Yale and Harvard-educated lawyer in New York. After being offered a partnership in the firm, Rebecca bumps into her teenage summer love, Josh Chan, who tells her he is moving back home to West Covina, California.

In a search to follow happiness, Rebecca decides to follow Josh and move to West Covina. Rebecca then gets a job at Darryl Whitefeather's firm, where she meets her best friend, Paula, and moves into an apartment, and she flushes all of her depression and anxiety medication.
