A few weeks ago, my sorority took part in a 30-Hour Famine supporting World Vision in their efforts to end world hunger. Along with raising money for this organization, we were asked to fast from food for a whole 30 hours, starting 12 p.m. Thursday and ending at 6 p.m. on Friday.
I decided to attempt this 30 hours fast from food and realized just how much I rely on food every day. After six hours of fasting, I was beginning to crave any food I saw. Food was all I could think about during these long 30 hours, and once the fast was over, I indulged in a lot of carbs and cake.
During these long hours, I began to think of Jesus fasting for 40 days. How could this man not eat anything for 40 days? It's simple. He relied on and prayed to God to give him strength. He never faltered and for 40 days, put all his focus and energy in our creator, the King of Kings. This is so much easier said than done.
“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Mathew 4:4
I began to wonder...why do we not crave God like we crave a burger? It sounds funny saying it like that, but it's so true. When I wake up, I already have planned what I'm going to eat for lunch and dinner, and I never forget to eat a meal. Why can't our relationship with God be like this? We should wake up craving to read the Bible and be fed by His Word. Every day, we need to wake up planning time to spend with God and in His Word.
The hunger you feel for something more in this world is God. Anytime you crave answers to something you're struggling with, or what to do next in your life, go to the Word. Pray to God, and he will fulfill that hunger. Let's do all we can to plan our daily devotional to God. Thirst for more, and God will provide.
