As a Baltimore native, I've known how to pick crabs since I was a small child and I can tell you that crabs from anywhere other than the Bay probably aren't worth it. Since I've lived in Birdtown my whole life, I've gone to dozens of different crab houses, and have a few favorites. Here are 5 crab houses that are worth a trip to in Baltimore, not in any particular order.
1. Conrad's
Located on Joppa Road in Parkville, MD, Conrad's Crabs has a large menu with options such as fish-n-chips, crab cakes, and shrimp tacos. However, it's their crabs that give them the great reputation they have.
2. Gaffney's
A Baltimore staple since 1970, Gaffney's Back Fin is named after the back fins of the blue crab that lives in the Chesapeake. The crab house is located in Highlandtown, Baltimore. With reasonable prices and great seasoning, there's a reason that their crabs have been a top choice in Baltimore.
3. Bo Brook's
Located in Canton in its iconic lighthouse building, Bo Brook's has been serving the 410 for over 50 years. With an added bonus of an amazing view of the Inner Harbor, Bo Brook's is a must if you're craving crabs.
4. Chris' Seafood
Also in Canton, Chris' Seafood is known for the large, well-seasoned crabs. Although they only accept cash and are take-out only, it is well worth the trip.
5. Captain James Seafood Palace
Located in its iconic boat-shaped building, Captain James Seafood Palace hosts an all you can eat crabs special Monday through Thursday 4 pm-9 pm, for only $32 a person (for only 2 hours)! A deal you can't beat!
But what is Baltimore without crab cakes? Below are my favorite places to get crab cakes from in Baltimore- all lump meat, minimal filler, and seasoned with Old Bay.
6. Koco's
Located in the eccentric neighborhood of Hamilton, Koco's Pub crab cakes are a treat in my household, they're amazing, filling, and packed with flavor.
7. G&M
G&M Restaurant & Lounge was voted "Best Crab Cake" by Baltimore Magazine- a huge honor since crab cakes are available in dozens of restaurants in the city. And trust me, they are well deserving of that title.
And there you have it, folks! Five of my favorite crab spots in Baltimore and a bonus two places for crab cakes! Grab your Old Bay, your mallets, a few napkins, and some friends because this will be a great time.
