At UFC Fight Night 143, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone continued to prove why he is one of the best in the world when he returned to Lightweight recently to take on Alexander Hernandez in which he finished the fight in brutal fashion. Cowboy Cerrone set the pace and showcased veteran skill as he broke down Hernandez throughout the 1st round before landing his trademark Head kick to drop Alexander Hernandez, and finished with brutal punches before the ref stepped in.
Not only did Cowboy walk away with his 35th win in his career he added to his statistics in the record books as he now holds the record for the most wins in UFC history with 22, most finishes in the UFC with 16, and has the most post-fight bonus awards with 16. As Cowboy celebrated with his son Danger and his family during the Post-fight Interview, he mentioned one name that absolutely makes sense at this point, Conor Mcgregor.
After the call out Conor Mcgregor took to Twitter to gladly accept the challenge after a performance like that. While everyone knows Conor gets what Conor wants as Dana White even expressed his interest in the fight. They clashed momentarily at a press conference when they exchanged words before Conor made his move to the Lightweight division but nothing happened.
While both have verbally agreed to the bout there is nothing set in stone as we are still waiting for the Nevada State Athletic Commission to serve The UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor Mcgregor their punishments for their brawl that took place after their fight at UFC 229. There is no telling if they will just be hit with fines, suspensions, or both. If both fighters are hit with suspensions we do not know right now how long they will last for. If Conor is hit with a year due to his history then Cowboy Cerrone may have to shift his focus to another direction.
Before returning to Lightweight Cowboy took his talents to the Welterweight Division where he has 7 wins and 4 losses. His last fight in the Welterweight Division he took on knock out artist "Platinum" Mike Perry and finished him in the 1st round via Armbar which definitely did some damage to Perry's arm. With his return to the Lightweight division and finishing the #11 ranked Alexander Hernandez, Cowboy will take a huge leap back into the top 15 or top 10 rankings in the division.
There are plenty of names in the Top 10 rankings in the Lightweight Division that Cowboy Cerrone can take on as fight announcements keep rolling out but the one that seems to make the most sense at the moment is Conor Mcgregor but that is up in the air until the court case is settled. Hypothetically speaking if both Conor and Khabib are both suspended for a lengthy period, Cowboy Cerrone still has a mountain to climb with Top 5 fighters in the lightweight division like Al Iaquinta, Kevin Lee, Dustin Poirier and the person who will more than likely be next to face Khabib Nurmagomedov, "El Cuyuy" Tony Ferguson.
