Nura Afia

Once again, CoverGirl is showing how much they don’t care about the societal status quo. The makeup company recently released word of their new spokeswoman and model. Her name is Nuria Afia. And this amazing beauty rocks more than just CoverGirl makeup – she wears hijab.

If you’re not educated on the Muslim practice of hijab, – and it’s okay if you don’t because many Americans have no understanding of Islam in general – “hijab” is a religious code to promote modesty by covering the head and the chest.

Nura Afia is a beauty vlogger that caught CoverGirl’s attention. By adding her to their roster of more inspiring people (with new CoverBoy, James Charles), CoverGirl is adding more representation to their group of women (and now men) who are changing the game when it comes to makeup. It is so important that this generation focuses on representing every boy and girl out there today and help them feel that they’re not alone.

Personally, I always look for the plus size person being represented in the media. Everyone looks for someone that looks like them, and now, little Muslim girls interested in makeup are being represented in the industry. It’s important to show the younger generation that they are beautiful and do not have to fit the white, skinny stereotype that is constantly represented. Everyone is different, whether it be race, religion or gender.

In this (hopefully brief) stint of xenophobia in the United States, the country needs to understand that just because someone is Muslim doesn’t make them any different or less-deserving of seeing someone like themselves successfully making a name for themselves. Role models are very important when it comes to a developing mind, especially when it comes to self-esteem.

Afia is just another person who is changing the beauty industry for the better with the help of CoverGirl. You can catch her in the company's "So Lashy" campaign that is coming out soon. Let’s get excited for diversity in the spotlight. It’s about time.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
