Cover Artists You Should Check Out

Sometimes cover artists do it better.

As someone who has been musically trained, finding a cover artist who is able to follow musical "rules" is always exciting. Often, popular artists on the radio sing off pitch or fail to articulate. I've come to find that I sometimes enjoy cover songs more than the original because of this. I'm constantly looking for covers of songs that I enjoy on the radio, but that I hear mistakes in. Cover artists don't always follow these "rules" either, though. Sometimes their style makes the song sound better, or they may even just give it a new twist. It's interesting to see how two artists can give the same song an entirely different feel. Even though not all of these artists follow the "rules" of music, they all made me feel something when I first heard their versions of these popular songs.

Alex Aiono

This particular cover by Alex has recently blown up on social media. His near perfect articulation and his bilingual mashup of Drake's popular "One Dance" and Nicky Jam's "Hasta el Amanecer" definitely grabbed my attention. He mixes these two songs together perfectly, and gives a new and special feel to them. He has a lot of other really awesome covers on his Youtube channel, so check him out when you have the time!

Boyce Avenue

Boyce Avenue was the first cover band that I ever discovered. They're the reason I fell in love with the concept of cover artists. I think cover artists are underrated, because a true cover artist does something even harder than making an original song. Making a song already produced and popular your own is hard; a majority of the time, cover artists will try to sing a song the exact same as the original artist, and that's where they go wrong. Making a song your own after it's already well known is hard, and Boyce Avenue does an amazing job of making every song they cover their own.

Walk Off The Earth

Walk Off The Earth is probably my favorite cover band. They also have original songs, but I'm intrigued by the way they make popular songs almost unrecognizable. They often use everyday objects as instruments, and they're able to make any song sound different and great with their own special style. They've also done covers of other popular songs, such as "Rude" by Magic and "Can't Feel My Face" by The Weeknd.

I hope you enjoyed them as much as I do. All of these artists have more covers on their Youtube channels as well as some original pieces, so you should definitely check them out. They do a fantastic job of making you feel something when you listen to them, as well as giving songs a new and interesting twist.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
