The Court Isn't On Kesha's Side, But I Am

Abuse victims deserve justice, always.

The Court Isn't On Kesha's Side, But I Am

Kesha's court case is the exact reason why so many women (and men) decide not to report sexual assaults. The court system is never in their favor so what's the point of even trying? It's extremely sad, but that's how most people who have been in her situation feel. Sometimes there is justice for the victim, however, there are too many times that the abuser gets away without a single repercussion.

Kesha Rose Sebert is the 28-year-old singer of popular songs such as "Tik Tok," "We R Who We R," and "Crazy Kids." Her legal battle has been ongoing for about two years already. Dr. Luke, the man who had previously guided her and produced her music, had been allegedly abusing her physically, emotionally, sexually, and mentally. Kesha had a contract under Sony Music that began her work with Dr. Luke. She was only 18 when she was signed to his label back in 2005.

Kesha had gone to rehab in early 2014 because of an eating disorder that she said was caused by Dr. Luke and the way he treated her. Later that year she began her long journey with the court system by suing him for sexual assault and battery. Dr. Luke ended up countersuing Kesha and her manager (also her mother) for defamation. The only win Kesha had during her recent case was when the two charges against her by Dr. Luke were dropped by a New York judge. However, on February 19, 2016, the judge working on her current case against Dr. Luke and Sony Music claimed that there was not enough evidence to support her abuse allegations and would not let her out of her contract with Sony. She still has to make another six albums with them.

When things like this happen there is no way that the public will keep quiet. Kesha was abused in so many different ways and there is nothing that can justify the ruling. No person should be forced to work in the same company as the person who is harming them and causing them to be scared and miserable. This poor woman represents the thousands of people who do not get justice for what they have been through.

Sony will not let Kesha break her contract, but offered to give her another producer. That really does not help anything. Sony is supporting this abuse. They are trying to make her change instead of Dr. Luke. How is that fair? It's not. If she stays with him she will be working alongside someone who has tormented her, but if she leaves and gets a new producer under Sony her music will not be promoted as well as before and her entire career will plummet. There's really no winning for her until Sony lets her break the contract and Dr. Luke gets charged for the crime. The way I see it, until they do something about this terrible situation and find justice for Kesha, they have no business. No one wants to support a company who promotes this kind of behavior. It is absolutely unacceptable and there is nothing compelling me to buy anything from them.

This one is for Kesha and all of the women and men who never get to see their abusers receive the punishment they deserve. It has to be one of the hardest things to go through but there are always people on your side, even if the court isn't. I stand with Kesha because nobody should be hurt like she was or have to watch their abuser walk away free.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
