There is a movie that came out in 2011 about fathers called "Courageous." It was one of the very few movies that came out that had a very spiritual meaning behind it. The movie is similar to "Fireproof," but it has a different storyline to it. The scenarios in the movie show different parts of the men who are courageous. In our Christian lives, we face many different obstacles and scenarios in which we need to have courage like the men in the movie. In the parable of the lost son, the son had courage to go back to his father and tell him what he has done.
"I will set out and go back to father and say to him: Father I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men. But he got up and went to his father. But while he was still along way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." ( Luke 15:18-20)
It took courage for the son to go back to his father and come home. In the movie these men are police officers who risk their lives everyday and when a tragedy struck one of fathers it made a realize that God is in control. Courage is bravery that can be very spiritual and help get through things and in the movie it says COURAGE begins at home. As Christians we are facing a world that is beyond us and it takes courage to stand up for what is right, because we are afraid of what others might think, but we are called to be different.
In Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV), "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
The Lord will not leave or forsake us, but we are the ones to decide if we will leave the Lord. If we do leave Him, then He wants you to come back and will be waiting there for you with open arms. It takes courage to come back to the Father. The type of bravery that we need to have is to try everyday to play in the ultimate fight for your soul, Jesus has already won the fight through death on the cross, and it takes that strength and bravery to be willing to give up your life for somebody like us.
We face difficulties everyday and it is a never-ending process for the battle of your soul. Satan tries so hard to get somebody who is on the Lord's side in every way possible, but if you stand up to Satan and tell him Satan get behind me, he will shrivel, but he will continue to try to get you to fall away from the Lord. The courage to stand up for what is right is not always the easy thing to do in a world like what we live in, but when we take that stand for Jesus, and follow Him. He will walk with us down that road and help you along the way. Courageous is one of the few movies that have came out that shows that the Lord is present and He is in control.
The men come together and sign a treaty that says that they will be a father who serves the Lord, and we as Christians need to serve the Lord. You are not signing a piece treaty on paper, but when you are baptized into Christ you make a commitment to follow Jesus. We ask the Lord for strength and courage when things go wrong, but what about the times when things go right? Courage is the bravery it takes to do what is right. You may face criticism, but if you stand up for the Lord and willing to face it, that takes courage and it is hard to be courageous. If you are on the Lord's side, then He will give you the strength and courage to do what is right and get you through. Courage is bravery, but not just bravery because having courage means to do right when others do not.
Do you have courage to stand up for the Lord? Amen!
