What It's Like Being The Country Music Fan In A Friend Group

Growing up in the Northeast there were never many country music fans. In fact until just around my sophomore year of high school I, too, refused to listen to it. That summer when I went to camp one of the girls in my cabin showed me a few songs that I actually thought were pretty good. This made me begin to look into it a bit more, and I discovered that I really like country music. However, when I came home I was back to my friends who still will not listen to my country music (no matter how many times I tell them its actually good!).

1.All of your friends look disgusted at the mention of country music.

It's really not that bad. I could be doing much worse things with my time than listening to country music. There is no reason to be putting me on trial for this.

2. You are never handed the aux cord after playing one country song.

One time. I played a country song one time.

3. You have two playlists, one with country music for when you are alone the other without your favorite tunes.

This became a phenomenon when I placed two country songs on a playlist for a party at my house and my friends would not stop reminding me of it. On a playlist of 100 songs all they could remember was the 2% that was country.

4. Your friends will listen to "Sweet Home Alabama" whenever they want but anything else is bad.

For some reason a lot of people in the Northeast listen to "Sweet Home Alabama". Not sure why.

5. No one will go to country concerts with you.

I gave up on going to country concerts a long time ago. My friends don't like it and even if I paid for their ticket they refused to sit through it.

6. You can't say you don't like their music because if you do then there will be no music playing ever.

I am not the biggest fan of some big names out there. However, if I voice my dislike I get told either how could you, or you're the one who likes country.

7. When a new song comes out you can't get excited over it with your friends, instead you blast it alone in your car/room.

8. While everyone watches the Billboard Awards and MTV Awards together when the CMAs or ACMs come on you are left with just yourself.

Sometimes my dog even joins me on those nights.

9. Constantly having to defend why country music is not pointless.

10. When a bunch of your friends go see Florida Georgia Line or some other pop country artist and don't think to invite you because "it's not really that country."

This is a real thing that happened to me.

11. The feeling when one of your friends finally decides that country music isn't so bad after all.

Once you have at least one other person that agrees with you on this matter it makes it a little easier. In some car rides you are allowed to listen to it because you can win in a vote 2-1. Even if you don't find a friend that likes country as well, with everything else in life just keep rocking it. No one can tell you how to live your life, and hey take it from me country music is great.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
