Attention all college students: what would you think if I told you that by simply drinking more than two mixed drinks, you have a greater chance of being sexually assaulted/sexually assaulting someone?
Almost all sexual assaults are committed by someone you know, especially when at least one of you is intoxicated.
Here are some tips for reducing your likelihood of being sexually assaulted or sexually assaulting someone.
1. Don't drink the punchĀ
I know it can be tempting to get a cup of that mesmerizing pink juice, especially when it's free, but not knowing how what kind of alcohol you're consuming can have harmful effects. If you are going to drink, make it yourself. Mixed drinks are safer than straight shots and are sure to never leave your drink unattended.
2. Sex should NEVER be forcedĀ
If someone has consumed an abundance of alcohol, it still is not an excuse to force sex on them. There is no situation that justifies sexual assault. Girls, be careful how much you consume and guys, be a gentleman and make sure she gets to bed safe and untouched.
3. COMMUNICATE!!!
There's nothing more awkward than a miscommunication between two people when it comes to what they are willing and not willing to do. Although everyone wants things to go smoothly, it is important to tell your partner what you are comfortable with, especially when it comes to sex.
4. No really does mean no
No does not mean, "convince me." No means NO. Men sometimes take this as a challenge and women are sometimes afraid to turn guys down but if there is ever a moment where someone says "No, I am uncomfortable," listen to them. Open communication is key.
5. Who cares what your friends think?Ā
Just because Bobby expects you to go all the way with the girl on your date, does NOT mean you need to do anything you or your partner is uncomfortable with.
Frequently people, especially men, experience peer pressure when it comes to carrying out sex but you have to live your life for you and not fall victim to peer pressure.
Sexual assault should not be as common as it is. With the presence of alcohol, young people are putting themselves in great danger, especially at parties and other social gatherings. With these five tips, you and your friends can significantly reduce the chances of being sexually assaulted. Stay safe, have fun, and don't drink too much!
