For those outside of the cosplay hobby it can seem bizarre and confusing. Today we have the privilege of interviewing Kathleen "Katkwo" Wong to clear up some frequently asked questions. Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.
KW: It's no problem!
Q. Tell everyone a little bit about yourself?
KW: Hi! My name is Kathleen, I go by "Katkwo" online. I'm 26 years old and work in the healthcare field. I was born in San Francisco, CA but grew up in Hong Kong so English is my second language.
Q. Let's dive in, how long have you been into this hobby of cosplaying?
KW: My first convention was Lexington Comic Con in March of 2019, so that would be just over a year now. I kind of came in late most cosplayers start at an early age. I started when I was 25 years old.
Q: What started your adventure into cosplaying?
KW: Being a sort of nerdy introverted teenager, I did not have a lot of confidence.. Ironically, my lack of confidence motivated my continued interest in cosplay. Cosplaying boosts my self confidence and I have really enjoyed that aspect. I have enjoyed the connections with everyone I have met during conventions. I also love seeing other cosplays and see how others assemble their cosplays.
Q: What would you say is the most difficult aspect of cosplaying?
KW: Being dedicated to cosplay all year round is the hardest part for me. It can be financially draining to prepare cosplays, hotels, and flights. Most conventions I attend are in the summer, so I try to plan and put together cosplays during the off season.
Q: What are three essential things you need for a convention?
KW: Eyelash glue, it doubles as a quick prop glue touch up if needed. Lip gloss, to touch up especially after eating/drinking all day. A handler is helpful, that's someone to carry around essential items and to touch up my costume.
Q: There seems to be a divide in the cosplay world over "crafters" and people who buy their cosplays online. What is your take on this "rivalry"?
KW: Honestly, I buy or commission my costumes and props. There seems to exist this sense of entitlement or superiority with people who craft their cosplays. This is more reflective of the person and not the hobby. Everyone cosplays with a different interest and purpose. I can't speak for everyone, but it seems like people get into this hobby to express themselves and not to belittle other people. I give props to anyone who is able to go out in public wearing a cosplay, it can be really intimidating.
Q: What are some of the best things you've learned about yourself since you started cosplaying?
KW: Confidence. When I first started cosplay, it took me some courage to get out of my comfort zone to wear wigs and costumes. It's really helped me be more social and see myself in a better light.
I first thought I was an introvert, but I have realized that I am also an extrovert. Since I have started cosplaying, I have met so many wonderful fellow cosplayers and people at the conventions. The interactions with everyone I connected with are usually the experiences I reminiscence afterwards.
