Hey Science Deniers, Creating A Vaccine Is Science

While the debate on whether the COVID-19 vaccine will be available before or after the election day. I wondered how the science deniers that represent a lot of the Republican Party are backing a scientific exercise like a vaccine. Yes, it is a science that happens when a vaccine is created. It doesn't magically appear like Mary Poppins and a sugar cube.

There are a lot of myths swirling around vaccines, the biggest and most harmful is the one that states vaccines cause autism. But those are different vaccines for a different article. We are talking about the current vaccines that come out yearly for flues and viruses that appear due to failures in preventing the spread.

The head of the CDC, Doctor Redfield, stated this last week that wearing a mask is the best prevention from contracting or spreading COVID-19. Our president has contradicted him and made claims that Redfield has no understanding of the virus and is misspeaking. Though the Woodward tapes revealed that the president is aware of how and why this virus has spread so quickly throughout the country, yet he propagates a storyline of not admitting these issues because the American citizens cannot handle this kind of information.

All of this has culminated in a series of events that should not have happened. We are heading towards two hundred thousand deaths in our country. Many of these deaths were people that were on the front lines of this pandemic trying to help others only to be taken down by it. Yet the country is torn between the president that wants Americans to go about their lives like normal and the CDC wants us all to stay home whenever possible and always wear a mask.

We have governors and mayors trying to keep their states and cities from succumbing to the pandemic as the president travels to their cities and holds rallies with thousands of people without masks and care or concern for their health.

Recently during an interview, the president stated his plan is herd immunity, (his words were "herd mentality). Of course, in April he stated that herd immunity would likely kill about two million citizens and he was not willing to take that course. But during this last interview he stated, that was his plan all along. He is okay with losing millions of Americans because he doesn't believe in the science of wearing a mask.

So why do these same people who won't wear a mask want to get a vaccine? Or do they? Are they just supporting the president because he is their president and he won't lead them the wrong way? Is their favorite news media giving credence to the vaccine and saying it will cure and make you healthier and life will be normal after you get this magical vaccine? There seems to be a disconnect from the science and the reality of these groups of people. Do you think these science deniers get an annual flu vaccine? They don't hesitate to make that blanket comment that the seasonal flu kills people too.

So, let's talk about the vaccine that is available right now. The flu vaccine is a yearly vaccination that the CDC approves for the prevention of seasonal flu. It isn't one hundred percent accurate however if you are healthy and want to stay that way, getting a vaccine will probably prevent you from being compromised by this year's flu.

Yes, indeed, you can still get the flu after you get the vaccine. The problem is there are many strains of flues and the vaccine is for no more than 4 or these strains. However, the vaccine will more likely reduce the severity of the flu that you might get. Instead of dying from the seasonal flu, you will have a few days in bed and back to work in no time. I don't know about you, but that seems like science at its best.

I am a true believer of science, and the flu shot, the pneumonia shot, and recently the shingles shot. Why because I don't want to get sick, nor do I want to make my family or friends sick either.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
