Blue Lives Matter

Respecting authority regardless of circumstance.

Blue Lives Matter
Jules Molinari

In today's world, some people think cops are terrible people and consider them to be "pigs." To me, cops are selfless heroes who work hard to keep their cities safe. Don't get me wrong, there are some bad cops who give the rest of the police community a bad rep, but 99 percent of cops are wonderful people. I truly believe this because I have family members who are active or retired cops--three of my uncles and my cousin. They are some of the best people I know and I'm proud to be related to them. They're tough and they love what they do.

My Uncle Jim is my godfather. He's my dad's brother-in-law (my dad's sister's husband) and is one of my favorite uncles. He is a retired NYPD detective and worked in the narcotics department in the Bronx. As cool as his job may sound, it was so dangerous. My godfather and his co-workers would do a lot of undercover work and arrest tons of drug dealers and addicts in a rough area of the Bronx. Luckily, nothing serious happened to him or to his brothers and sisters in blue. My godfather retired in 2001 after blowing his knee while jumping over a subway gate during a police chase.

This picture was taken in May or June 2002 when my Uncle Jim was honored at my preschool show. My class and I were dressed up as firefighters and sang some songs. My teacher and principal called him up on stage to thank him for his service and gave him flowers. This is my favorite picture of us together.

My dad's two brothers, Robert (left) and Rich (center), and my dad's nephew and my cousin Paul (right) are all Union City Police officers. My Uncle Bob retired from the force about five or six years ago while my Uncle Rich serves as the Police Chief and Paul is a patrolman. Union City holds a special place in my dad's family's hearts because that's where my dad and his siblings all grew up. All three of them take their jobs very seriously and they do their best to keep Union City safe--especially my Uncle Rich.

My Uncle Rich is the youngest Molinari sibling. He joined the force in 1988 as a patrolman and worked his way up through the ranks. Union City is located in Hudson County, NJ; there are some really nice places there and some not-so-nice places. My Uncle Rich was sworn in as Police Chief in November 2013. He is well respected by all his officers and everyone believed he'd be the right choice as the next chief. Being the police chief and a husband and the father of three teenage girls (Aleasa 18, Jackie 16, and Olivia 14) is extremely hard work, but my uncle manages it perfectly. At his 50th birthday party this past January, a lot of his officers said "the day Rich retires, I'm going to retire because I don't want to work under anybody else."

Uncle Jim, Uncle Rich, Uncle Bob, and Paul, thank you so much for your service and being so selfless to keep everyone else safe. It isn't easy being a cop but you wouldn't have any other way. I love you. #BlueLivesMatter

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
