Bar Harbor, Maine used to be one of my family's best kept secrets until tourism spiked this past year. I was worried there would be fanny packs, long wait times and expensive "lobstah." Little did I know, the fanny pack was only spotted on my aunt. It still feels like a happy little town that has not been overrun just yet. This trip was so special to me sharing it with family and my new fiancé who had never been. I wanted to share some of my favorite things to do if you are looking for a new place to travel.
Food:
1. Side Street Cafe
After all the family trips, Side Street Cafe still remained my favorite restaurant in town. The menu has everything from quesadillas to lobster dinners. In the picture, we ordered the Lobster Dinner, Lobster Mac & Cheese and the "Lazy Man's Lobster." I have never eaten something I haven't liked. Their blueberry pie and mixed drinks are also on point. On Friday's and Saturday's, they have a band. Their service is exceptional. It is the friendly spot in town off a "side street," that you definitely shouldn't miss.
2. McKay's Public House
McKay's has a spectacular ambiance about it. The owner greets you and takes you towards your table, usually on the outdoor patio with trailer lights all around. They play nice music and their employees are the nicest in town. If you go, ask for the "Ginger Ninja," a waiter who was named by his other staff members. The chateaubreand special was out of this world. Also, the bartender has some nice wine pours.
3. Jordan's Restaurant
Jordan's is a delicious spot for a quick breakfast before your activities. The blueberry pancakes will be out in less than 10 minutes. They turn everything out so fast, you won't believe it. Jordan's has many loyal followers and will do well for many years to come.
Date Ideas:
1. Improv Acadia
We strolled upon this comedy show at 9:30PM before their "Late Show" and was so happy we did. My fiancé and I laughed the whole time and were in awe at how great the comedians can think on their feet. I have never seen a comedy show in fact and now I can't wait to see more. Word on the street is that SNL popped by there earlier in the year.
2. Bar Harbor Inn
The Inn is completely magical, see the picture above. If you are getting dinner there, listening to the piano in the lounge, or sitting outside watching the sun go down, it is great for a romantic night out. I can only hope to stay their one day in my future.
3. Atlantic Brewing Company
ABC is where the popular Blueberry Ale is brewed. It can be found at every bar in town but if you want something different, head up to the brewery for the day. It is only 20 minutes away.
Adventures:
1. Jordan Pond
One of the most popular spots in Acadia National Park is Jordan Pond. It is a three mile loop around the pond, not too strenuous. You can throw your name on the wait list for lunch and be back in time for some phenomenal popovers to be ready. This past trip we did the loop and also biked to it. Watch out for the bees though!
2. Carriage Roads
Carriage roads are all around the park. Most people rent bikes for the day circle throughout the park. You can go for runs and take carriage rides, too. Bring a map or you might get lost like my group!
3. Acadia Trails
I couldn't plop a single hike to be better than the others. There are so many in Acadia with amazing views of the ocean, the islands, and the mountains. Take your pick! We loved cadillac mountain and the Gorham mountain trail. One year, our dogs spotted a moose by Gorham and booked it almost off the side of the mountain. Maybe you'll get lucky, too.
Big thank you to my Aunt Bobbi for graciously having us every year. I loved every minute of it!
