11 Entertaining Classes That You Can Add To Your Electives List At Towson University

In This Article:

Listen guys, I understand that college is extremely hard. You just want to pass your classes, get a great job, and overall, have a good time.

Not only do you have to take classes for your major, but you also have to add some electives here and there to fulfill your general credit requirements. Picking the right classes to get where you want to be may seem stressful, but I have a few classes on my list that you just might want to add to yours! If you are a stressed college student, these electives might save you the drama and help you boost your GPA. Plus, they're super fun!

(Side note: If you use RateMyProfessor, you'll enjoy the class even more. I'm sure there's always one teacher you aren't going to like, but take that into consideration.)

1. EDUC 202: Perspective in America’s Urban Schools

This course focuses on the different schools in inner-city areas and talks about the issues among these public schools. The course really opens up your eyes about these issues, and allows you and other students to work with each other to discuss the problems and find out solutions to what these schools need. As a plus, you watch a lot of documentaries and cool videos. My favorite is "Freedom Writers" for sure.

Not only do you talk about schools, but you can also rant about racial and economic issues. You write quite a bit of papers for this class, but the content is pretty straightforward and easy to understand. It makes you develop a passion for the class even when you only used it as a core. The group projects are super enjoyable and you make a whole lot of friends.

2. ENGL 317: Writing for Business & Industry

This class is a whole gem. And no, it's not like your typical English class. This class is where you learn how to write resumes, cover letters, infographics, and proposals. Sounds boring, right? But ask yourself the obvious question: why are you in college? TO GET A JOB!

This class will teach you how to get internships and a job, and help you stand out from the rest. You may be doing this for a grade, but I still use my templates from this class to this day and I have landed some pretty cool internships because of it. You only have four years, so start now. My professor made things super easy and assignments were a breeze. In the end, I really got something out of it. I know 300-level classes may seem scary, but this class will make you feel confident that you can do the rest!

3. HLTH 220: Sexuality in a Diverse Society

Yes, this is pretty much a sex-ed course and a lot of Towson students take it. It's pretty much common sense and you get to learn some basic health tips. (Let's face it, some of you need it.) You will watch a TON of movies and short video clips that will make you laugh, so you won't want to miss class. There's a lot of personal sharing and it is really interesting to hear what people have to say. Who doesn't want to learn about sexuality and gender and get a good grade?

4. WMST 231: Women In Perspective

This course is all about the ideas of feminism and women empowerment. If you are passionate about things like this, I recommend it. Even if you are a guy, this is a good class for you. This class is also discussion-based and if you like sharing your opinion, this will be a fun class! Trust me, there are so many things you didn't know that women contributed to this society.

 5. THEA 101: Acting I

If you are an introvert, STILL take the class. I'm shy as hell and I loved this class. I was talking on the first day and making a fool out of myself and still enjoyed doing it. This class will help you come out of your shell and you will become an extrovert...almost. You have to do what you have to do to get that A+. Plus I met some super cool people, so I definitely got something out of it.

6. PHIL 103: Introduction to Ethics

I know, when you hear about philosophy, this may come off as BORING. But this is one of the best cores I took and let me tell you why. There are no right or wrong answers in the class. This class is mainly about giving your opinion and challenging ideas, as well as listening to what others have to say. Most of it is common sense and what your views are when it comes to doing the right thing.

Of course, you have to do a little bit of writing, but it is such a breeze because you are basically giving your opinion. Trust me, it is easy to write 5-6 pages about YOUR argument. If you think you are wrong, just write it because it's your thoughts. The language might seem hard, but if you ask your professor to explain it, it sounds super understandable. This is coming from someone who hates talking in class and suddenly I'm always raising my hand. Just take the class! You might be surprised.

 7. HLTH 101: Wellness In A Diverse Society

In this class, you'll learn about exercise, dieting, nutrition, pregnancy, sexuality, and pretty much a little bit of everything and beyond. I enjoyed this class and my professor, too. We did a behavior project where we would count our calorie intake, what we ate, how much we worked out, and how much water we drank. In the end, we wrote a reflection paper and I enjoyed it because I ended up losing weight. (For those who want to get an A+ and have a nice body at the end.) Writing the paper wasn't even that bad because it was basically me talking about myself. If this class still isn't appealing to you, I don't know how you're going to survive picking classes.

 8. GERO 101: Introduction to Gerontology

This class is basically the study of old people! For those who are in the healthcare track, this will be an interesting class for you to take. You will learn about the social, psychological, and physical view on elderly people. Who doesn't want to learn about interesting old people? Believe me, they are fun to learn about and the class might make you want to go in that field.

 9. PSYC 101: Introduction to Psychology

If you want to know the basics of psychology and learn about how people interact and behave, this is the class for you. You aren't expected to know a lot, but it's mainly common sense and really interesting. In my class, we were taught examples in our daily lives and everyone was like "whoa!" It felt like being in a class full of magic tricks. That sounds weird to say, but it's true. Plus, the topic is really fun to learn about. Why do you think a lot of people major in it?

10. KNES 235: Physical Wellness for a Healthy America

This course is also like a health course, but in this one, the whole class is based on working out and developing a fitness plan. Here, you focus on staying healthy, working on your muscles, and learning how to stay fit in the gym. Part of the class is a lecture and the other part of the class is working out. If you are looking for a class to develop a fitness plan that you can use for life, take this class! Working out isn't that bad, you know.

11. COSC 109: Computers in Creativity

For you savvy millennials out there; if you don't have a damn clue about technology, that's fine because this class will teach you. And no, I'm not talking about how to hack school files. I mean they teach you how to use Photoshop, Adobe, Microsoft, website building, and other things you need in your daily life. Who doesn't want to know how Photoshop works? Plus, your professor will be super understanding. You'll do mini-projects and assignments that you are most definitely going to be proud of. Plus, it's 2019, you should know how to use these things. If you don't, this is the class for you!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
