As if college isn't hard enough, you're 10 hours away from home, you are on your own for the first time in your life, you're out in the world to fend for yourself, and no one is there to answer your questions and scratch your back at night.
You lose your right hand woman in college. Instead of 20 feet from you, your mom is now hundreds of miles from you, and sometimes she doesn't even answer your phone calls! How rude! And when you get sick, no one is there to get you food, medicine, and snuggle you. Instead you're alone, in a dorm room bed, having to use a community bathroom. It's SO fun, let me tell you.
And at first, everything is going to seem so fun and independent. Then you get sick, and well, everything hits the fan.
"Mom, can you call and make me a doctor/dentist/eye appointment?"
Who knew that in the real world, you have to make your own appointments, much less you have to go on your own! Trust me when I say you don't miss anything as much as your mom explaining what is wrong with you when the doctor walks in.
"Can I wash whites with darks and my sheets and my towels?"
I'm not going to lie and say that I did my laundry at home, but I never thought it was so hard and tedious to do it in college. Much less, you are forced to use the laundry machines that somehow eat your clothes.
"So, mom, I have a hangover out of hell, and I don't know what to do."
It's college, we overindulge, but nothing is worse than having to ask your mom for the recipes she used in college to rid yourself of the Irish flu. She probably laughs, then she'll say in the sweetest voice you've ever heard, "suck it up, babe."
"Can you please give me more money?"
You go to mom first, and if that doesn't work, you resort to dad. But first you have to explain to your mom that you don't know how you went from $200 to $0.14 in a week, and someone must have stolen your credit card because it's just not possible.
"So, can you please call me and wake me up tomorrow morning?"
Sometimes alarms are too easy to turn off, but nothing is more reliable than your mom calling you 7 times to wake you up before you 9 a.m. But, you sure do miss those days when she just woke you up at home in your own bed.
"Mom, I'm sad."
We are all get sad, but I don't think anything is more sad than when you get in a depressing mood and your mom isn't there to talk to or hug you. You regret all those times you didn't take in your mom's love in high school.
"How many miles can I drive with my gas light on?"
We've all been there, and your mom usually yells at you, but we need to know these things! With only $0.14 in your account, gas is the last thing on your mind.
Last, but not least,
"Mom, I miss you, can you come see me please?"
I never thought it was possible to miss someone so much. She's the best person for advice and the first person you turn to whether it be a bad test or a bad boy. She somehow knows all of the answers. She's your best friend and life is hard without your best friend there for you. She's there for you for all the ups and downs, without you asking most of the time. And the best of all is she recognizes in your voice when things are wrong, and she knows exactly what to say.
I miss you mom, and I cannot wait to be home. Also sorry I ask too many questions, but it's only because I want to be as good as you one day. I love you!
