As the Impeachment Inquiry Hearings come to an end and the Thanksgiving holiday is just around the corner, how many families in American will sit around the table either in an embattled discussion or complete silence because of their personal and political opinions? It's hard to say, but I do know that there is not a family in America that does not have members with opposite views on politics. It isn't a new concept, it has been a never-ending disagreement with family members since the beginning of this Democracy.
Apart from the first Thanksgiving that hosted native American Indians by the pilgrims that left Europe for independence, and yes, that has been an argument for most families for many decades. This tradition that is supposed to be a day of giving thanks for the hard work and harvest of the year has turned into on some occasions a brawl in the dining room.
So, let's just think about what is about to happen to this country on the last Thursday in November. Many of us will wake up to the smells of pies baking in the oven, or even the roasted turkey in all its glory trussed with stuffing basting to perfection. The family dining room will be adorned with the best china and silverware. Crystal goblets and Waterford glasses will line the table and cloth napkins shaped like flowers or autumn leaves will rest on the tier of plates for each guest.
Okay, so now you know, I am a Martha Stewart fan and for years I tried my hardest to get my Thanksgiving table to look like hers. Although I am far from Martha in the physical creative sense, I can write a pretty picture of what I hoped to accomplish.
But let's get back to the topic of politics for a moment. We can all agree that the past few weeks of hearings were a disgrace to this country. As I watched Rep. Nunez, and Jordan berate and insult many of the subpoenaed witnesses' it made me wondered how they were ever elected to congress. I did, however, enjoy the few witnesses that took it upon themselves to stand up to those insults and fling them right back. Lt. Colonel Vindman is a strong soldier and I am proud to know he is here fighting for our Democracy.
Moreover, Dr. Fiona Hill has by far exceeded my expectations of a naturalized immigrant with a backbone of a soldier. As I listened to her opening statement, I knew right away she was a force to be reckoned with, and it was apparent the Republicans were not prepared for her either. She held her ground and contradicted most of the propaganda and stated in one instance as follows, "In the course of this investigation, I would ask that you please not promote politically driven falsehoods that so clearly advance Russian interests." She admitted she has issues with Ambassador Sondland and questioned his authority because of his involvement with Ukraine.
Hill was by far the best witness to end these proceedings and the fact that she has pointed out the harassment she has received on social media and other avenues will deter these zealots from any further recourse towards this dedicated woman. But it is probably not going to happen with the current resident in the White House tweeting insults and inflaming his base to convince them he is innocent of all accusations.
These hearings were set to inform the American people that our elected officials believe our president was possibly involved in a "High Crime and Misdemeanor," this was not a legal hearing or court battle that required due process, what comes next once the Judicial committee reviews what was discussed in these past two weeks as well as the closed-door depositions. This is not over, and we are in for a bumpy ride in December.
So, when you pull up a seat at the table on Thanksgiving Day, take a page from Dr. Hill and don't let the issues of the hearings spoil the fact that all Americans have the freedom of speech, have the freedom of the pursuit of happiness, and have the freedom to agree to disagree.
Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
