Author's Note: To further support the cause of the March For Our Lives Campaign, I have chosen to compile the contact information of every state representative and senator into a single list. I started writing this article right after the Parkland shooting; just over a month later, an additional school shooting in Maryland has occurred. However, this list can be utilized for more than urging gun control; it may be used to push for environmental protections, the protections of LGBTQ+ individuals or people of color, or whatever causes are important to the reader.

On, March 24, 2018, an estimated 200,000 individuals participated in the March For Our Lives in Washington D.C., urging lawmakers to enact common sense gun legislation. Initiated by survivors of the Stoneman Douglas shooting, civically engaged citizens participated in over 800 marches nationwide, actively shaping the future they wished to see. However, it is important to not let the momentum stop there. Talk is cheap. This motto is all too evident in American politics, but it can be applied to everyday citizens as well: Facebook rants and scented markers for witty protest posters are cheap; action takes more.

Let me be the first to admit it: I too have been all-too complacent in allowing any needless bloodshed to continue. I too have thought that every Facebook share is doing something. It is, in some infinitesimal sense. But shares and comments and likes are not enough. They will never be enough. So, from now on, I am vowing to do something. With each politically motivated rant, I will be placing a call to my senators and representatives urging them to enact change.

Now, imagine if others did the same. Imagine if each share or retweet translated into a call from a concerned citizen, into the signing of a petition, into donations or votes. Imagine what good could be done. I'll be making up for past shares too; as I have shared at least a dozen articles and videos in regards to the Parkland shooting, I will be placing a dozen calls to representatives of my state, calling for action. I do not know if they will listen, but they will hear me. It is my hope that they will hear your voice as well and that, together, concerned citizens who care about their country and the safety of themselves and those around them can make an impact. Let their offices be inundated with calls. Let us become more active participants in our democracy. Let us make our concerns be known.

I for one hate talking on the phone. I am one for writing strongly worded letters or e-mails. But, all too often, those get ignored by those who represent us. So, below is a handy-dandy script written up to read aloud when you call your representatives and senators:

"Hello. My name is _______________________. I won’t be needing a response. I am a constituent from ____(state)_____, _____(zip code)_______. I am calling today to address my concerns with gun control. I strongly encourage my senator/representative to introduce, support, and enact gun control legislation. Thank you for your time."

Not too bad, right? Of course this is written up to address gun control; however, it can be easily edited to whatever issues you want your elected officials to know your stance on. And, if you want, you can even throw in an extra bit of pathos just for good measure:

"Schools, offices, churches, and public spaces should be places in which hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow are supported; all too often, they are becoming places engrained with fear. No more lives need be lost; no more blood need be shed. Please, I implore you, support the gun control the U.S. needs in order to be comparable to other leading nations. The time for thoughts and prayers has passed. It is time for policy and change."

Now, if you don't know who your senator or representative is, that's okay--now's your time to learn. Below is a comprehensive list of the contact information (remember, e-mails and letters are easily ignored; calls have to be addressed and heard) of every single state representative and senator. Or, you can simply go to this site and type in your address to find out who represents you in Congress.

Remember, change begins with you. Shares and comments are one thing, but votes, signatures and calls to your elected officials are how we begin to change the world. Be a more active participant in your democracy. And, above all, go forth and let your voice be heard.

The following contact information was obtained from senate.gov and house.gov and is current as of March 2018.
