Once, we were a mountain’s crest
with no recollection of the
or when the cracks sprouted, and we broke off,
tumbling into the bottom of a surging river.
Jagged stones beneath white water, eroding,
while lives swam above us in the current.
We were cast out, the worm hanging from the hook
to be eaten as prey, or drown unwanted,
submerged in the eelgrass blades that trap us
in the midst of their sway.
The weight of the stream suffocates,
like the mud drinking us deeper into Earth.
I watch as the water takes pieces of you by
knowing I’m fading the same way.
