One of my favorite things about myself is the fact that I'm a vegetarian, and have been one for about eleven years. It makes me who I am, in a way. Being vegetarian means different things to people, whether it's just a meat free diet, or omitting animal-tested products, etc. However, there are many reasons that suggest everyone should think about becoming a vegetarian or vegan. (Vegetarians consume no meat or fish, while vegans are the same, yet they consume no dairy products.)
1. It's a lot easier than you think.
The simplest fact is becoming a vegetarian is insanely simpler than most people imagine. While I may be biased since I really never ate meat and never had to adjust to a diet without it, I've heard stories from people who became vegetarian later on and were surprised at how easy it was. I'm not saying that it's going to be the easiest thing ever and you'll never crave a burger, but it's not as hard as you think.
2. There are so many vegetarian food options.
The question I probably get asked every time I tell someone I'm a vegetarian is, "if you don't eat meat, then what do you eat?" I've come to realize that people think vegetarians only eat lettuce and tofu. When that is simply not the case, I've never even touched tofu in my life. There are many foods in this world that don't involve meat, and most things an be made without meat. For example, my favorite type of food is Mexican, which most people think is strange for a vegetarian. However, you can get any burrito, taco, enchilada, or empanada made without meat. And I bet you it may even taste better.
3. To put it simply, you'll be healthier.
Vegetarian diets have been proven to be are more healthful than the average American diet and prevent heart disease and reducing the risk of cancer. This boils down to the fact that most of the foods we consume are high in saturated fats and are processed, which makes them low in plant-based foods and complex carbohydrates. I'm not saying that vegetarians only eat vegetables and healthy foods. I eat my fair share of cheese fries and greasy foods, but vegetarians are generally more likely to eat vegetables and healthier options.
4. You'll have more energy.
One things most vegetarians say happened to them once they omit meat from their diet was they instantly felt more energized and healthier. This is because food nutrition generates more usable energy. An excess about of fat in your bloodstream means could cause your arteries to not open properly, meaning your muscles won't get enough oxygen. I never experienced because I became a vegetarian so long ago, and I envy everyone who felt this.
5. Most importantly, you'll be saving animals and the environment.
Animals don't deserve to be eaten and mistreated. If you won't eat a dog, why would you eat a pig? After watching countless documentaries, it is crazy to me that people are okay with how animals are treated for meat, and even dairy. Also, most of these foods aren't even healthy. Animals aren't ours. They're not food, they're friends.
In conclusion, I'm extremely passionate in educating people about being vegetarian or vegan. While I don't have the will to be a vegan currently, I do plan to later down the line. I hope this could help you think about becoming a vegetarian, or maybe give you that nudge you were waiting for. Let's save the world, one animal at a time.
