Traveling is awesome, fun and exciting, and while seemingly perfect, it also has its disadvantages. Generally speaking, I love to travel. That being said, traveling while in college has been a whole new and unique experience.
Until recently, I never felt as though traveling was stressful, taxing, exhausting or scary. In the past two weeks, I have traveled from coast to coast: New York City for four days, back to Ohio (where I go to college) for a few days in which I barely even had enough time to swiftly repack my bags before heading to San Fransisco. Over the course of these two weeks, several things went wrong—miraculously, and thankfully, I still made all of my flights and completed my trips.
The idea of escaping while traveling is riveting for some, however, I occasionally found myself feeling like I was missing out. Obviously being in New York City was special and incredibly fun, but what wasn't was seeing all of my friends Instagram and Snapchat posts from Halloweekend. Granted, I do still have three more years and Halloweens here at Miami University.
I am lucky enough to only have class Tuesday through Friday, meaning I have an extra long weekend. I learned quickly that this did not mean I could afford to forget about or disregard the fact that I am a student while I was not physically at school. Fortunately, my professors were extremely understanding when I had to miss a few classes for my trips, but I was obviously still expected to complete any work that was done during that time. I took a test on the airplane and completed several assignments while on vacation. This was new to me and definitely took some adjustment. Sometimes I felt like I was not really on vacation because I was constantly thinking about or doing school work.
While New York and Ohio are on Eastern Standard Time, California is not (by three hours). It is also a lot easier to get to New York compared to California. By the time I got to San Francisco and finally got to go to sleep I had been up for a total of 20 hours. A couple days later I was hit with yet another time change—daylight savings. Overall, I was beyond exhausted, and in hindsight, a redeye flight back to Ohio was not the best idea. It definitely took a few days to bounce back and reacclimate.
All of this is not to say that I did not enjoy my weekends away, I truly did, but honestly, it was an overwhelming month of travel. For the first time in my life, I am thankful that my next trip is not for a week and a half.
