One of the worst thing’s that writer’s face is the dreaded writer’s block. Some people don’t even believe that there is such a thing. However, most people have faced some sort of road block in their attempt to write. Even as I am writing this, I hit little bumps in the road where I have had to stop and come back to it.

Having friends who are also writer’s is a lot of help as well. Over the years as a writer I have been told these amazing ways to help “cure” writer’s block. One thing that can help get your creative brain working is just to keep writing. Write about anything that pops into your head and pursue that idea. Eventually something with happen. You might get an idea from what you were freewriting or you might have an epiphany about something else you were writing about but you were just thinking too hard about it.

Another option that you have is to talk to your friends. Nobody can make your brain work harder than your friends. Together you guys discuss a plethora of different topics and they also bring different opinions to the table. Friends are also there when you need an editor. They will usually tell you when your writing sounds funny or if just doesn’t make any sense. Microsoft Word can’t catch everything. Even if you don’t have friends or they just aren’t willing to read your work, you can go to the internet. The internet allows people from all across the world to get together and share ideas and opinions. Some people get inspiration from other cultures or from certain pages on the internet whether it is through Facebook or Instagram. The internet is so vast that you could even use Google to gain inspiration. All that anyone has to do is type in the search engine of their choice whatever it is they want and they will get it in a matter of seconds. Well, unless you’re on Lander University’s campus. Bearcat Wireless has been misbehaving recently and it might even take a few hours to get the inspiration needed from internet sources.

Lastly, you could simply make the decision to take a nap. Providing yourself with a break and taking a nap could benefit your writing in many different ways. You could wake up refreshed and with new ideas or you could have a marvelous dream which practically hands the inspiration for your next writing piece over to you. Whichever method you use, or if you use a completely different method, that is ok. We are all different and we are all motivated in different ways. What is important is that you know what works for you. Knowing how to get your brain working and how to get your ideas flowing is usually the hard part and having a method in which to make that process easier makes writing more enjoyable for yourself and for those who will read it later.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
