So, it's near week 9, and as soon as you know it, it will be the dreaded week 11: FINALS WEEK.
Are you prepared? Or are you freaking out? Procrastinating? Doing everything in your will and pretending like it's a million light years away?
Here are some tips and tricks to help you conquer the most dreaded week of college.
1. Get Mentally Prepared
What the hell does that mean, right? It means get all of your distractions out of the way. Planned to do something you can't stop thinking about? Do it now. Need to clean your room/apartment? It may increase your productivity later on. This will leave you feeling like you took care of everything you need to, and now are onto a clean slate to study... right?
2. Eat Healthy
The temptation to grab something quick and probably unhealthy is very appealing during finals week. DON'T GO DOWN THAT ROUTE. Go for something healthy. Protein, veggies, fruits and food that will make sure your blood sugar doesn't drop. Eating healthy will not only make you feel good about yourself, but it will also just make your body feel good in general. It has also been known to boost energy. Before the rush of finals and lots of studying, go out and get some groceries. If you are looking for free fruits and/or vegetables, there are many places on the UC Davis campus where you can do just that!
3. Seek Medical Attention If Needed
It's never fun to have to deal with medical issues during finals week. Trust me; been there, done that. Go beforehand to make sure you are physically and mentally prepared to tackle finals week. Whether it is a therapist, a psychiatrist, dentist or a primary care doctor. Go in for whatever you need so that it isn't an added stress and distraction during finals week.
4. Self Study, then Group Study
It is important to sit down with material from class and read over, practice, and struggle with it yourself. This will help you know what you already know, and bring to light what you need to work on. This will also help you come up with specific questions to ask in your professors office hours or to other students in study groups. It is then important to form study groups so you get a conversation going about the material, which could help you understand and remember the material more. Ultimately, if you get to the point where you are teaching others the material, you're golden.
5. Get Some Sun and Exercise
I know it may seem difficult to get out when studying indoors all day seems like it's a good way to maximize your studying time... but it actually isn't. Exercise not only induces endorphins, but it is also a break from studying where your mind actually will be storing all the learned information without you really thinking about it. You can also talk to yourself while running in order to test yourself away from your notes, but I'd advise you to not talk extremely loudly...
6. Change Up Your Study Spot
Studying in the same spot for countless hours can not only get boring, but distracting too. So, why not change it up? When your usual study spot starts to get too bland, and you find yourself losing focus, find somewhere else. The outdoors are free, so that is always an option? There's also other study lounges in friends apartment complexes, coffee shops or even empty classrooms!
7. Don't Forget to Take Breaks
Taking breaks is a good way to keep calm and carry on. After you have studied a good amount and feel the need to take a break, do so. A suggestion would be to go out for coffee with a friend, and preferably talk about something besides the material you are studying. Waring though: do not take too long of a break. This can lead to losing motivation and becoming lazy, which we all know we cannot afford during finals week (especially on the quarter system!).
Good luck to all of you beautiful and intelligent beings, and with these tips, I hope you conquer another finals week!
